Forbes (James) Oriental Memoirs, 4 vol., first edition, half-titles, engraved portrait and 93 engraved or lithographed plates (some stipple-engraved, some aquatint), 28 finely hand-coloured, mostly after W.Hooker, with errata leaf and 2 Directions to Binder leaves at end of vol.4, 2N2 in vol.1 with short tear to lower margin, plate of Cobra shaved at head and plate of Hindoo Family with short tear to lower margin (repaired), foxing to portrait and plain line-engraved plates but text and hand-coloured plates generally very clean (plate 79 of Keura Tree in vol.3 lightly browned), some spotting towards end of vol.3 & 4, Sir David Goldsmid-Stern-Salomons Bart.'s copy with his engraved bookplate, contemporary diced russia, gilt, spines gilt, g.e., some joints cracked, [Anker 148; Fine Bird Books p.96; Nissen ZBI 1409; cf.Abbey Travel 436, later remainder issue], 4to, for the author by T.Bensley, 1813. ⁂ A handsome copy of this excellent account of the culture, flora and fauna of India by a writer for the East India Company. Forbes spent seventeen years in India and filled numerous volumes with writings and sketches. The fine hand-coloured plates are mostly of natural history, particularly birds and fruits.Sir David Lionel Goldsmid-Stern-Salomons Bart. (1851-1925), scientific author, barrister and pioneer of road transport. His home at Broomhill, Tunbridge Wells is now the Salomons Museum and a centre for technology. Salomons was fascinated by electricity and Broomhill was one of the first homes to be fitted with electric light, as well as an early electric cooker, butter churn and alarms, all made by him and his staff in his workshops. He was also an horologist and assembled the largest private collection of watches and clocks by Abraham-Louis Breguet.
