Football - BRISTOL ROVERS (Jesse Whatley). A real photographic portrait postcard, titled `Jesse Whatley / "Benefit Souvenir" 1925`, by H.M. Veale of Bristol. Note: Jesse Winter Whatley (1895-1982), known as `Gentleman Jess`, was a goalkeeper who began playing competitively whilst in the British Army. After the First World War (where he served in the Wiltshire Regiment) he joined Trowbridge Town, but after just two months he was signed for Bristol Rovers, with whom he spent his entire professional career. Between 1922 and 1928 he played in 246 consecutive League games - a record that stood until 1953. He retired from professional football in 1930, yet continued to play at a local non-League level for a further two years, before briefly going into coaching, and then settling on a farm at Westerleigh (Glos.).
