MacDonald Gill (British 1884-1947)/A Map of England, Wales and Northern Europe/showing all the branches of WHSmith existing on 31 March 1931/scale 1in. to 1 mile/oil on panel, 210cm x 211cm/ Note:Born in Brighton in 1884, MacDonald 'Max' Gill (1884-1947), brother of the sculptor Eric Gill, became one of the leading graphic designers of his age. Although best known to the public for his entertaining pictorial poster maps, he was also an architect, letterer and mural painter. After joining a leading London architectural firm in 1903, he enrolled in calligraphy at the Central School of Arts & Crafts where his tutor was the legendary Edward Johnston. Beautiful lettering became an integral element in all his work. Gill set up his own studio in 1908, undertaking calligraphy, inscription design and mural painting. The following year he was commissioned by the Arts & Crafts architect Sir Edwin Lutyens to paint the first of a series of decorative panel maps for the houses of wealthy Edwardians. These came to the attention of Frank Pick, the Commercial Manager of the Underground Electric Railways of London (now London Underground), who asked Gill to create an eye-catching pictorial poster to amuse passengers as they waited for their trains. Published in 1914, the Wonderground Map of London Town caused people to 'watch so long they miss their trains yet go on smiling'. At the end of 1917 - while Max Gill was in Dorset working as architect on a model farm project - he was invited onto the headstone committee of the Imperial War Graves Commission. The alphabet and regimental badge he designed for the military headstone are still used today - perhaps his most enduring legacy. In the inter-war period Gill painted map panels for many notable firms and public institutions including Sun Engraving, Cunard, the University of London and the House of Commons. The W.H. Smith map was commissioned in 1929 by the firm's chairman Charles H. St. John Hornby and director Arnold D. Power soon after W.H. Smith had become a private company - and reflects the company's illustrious heritage as the number one stationer on British high streets. As well as the bookstalls and branches, it depicts the range of newspaper delivery methods - old and new - used by the firm. An Englishman in Paris could buy his daily paper at the W.H. Smith branch on the Rue de Rivoli - also shown on the map. Perhaps he travelled there on the aircraft The City of Glasgow, depicted over the Channel, which was the first luxury London to Paris service operated by Imperial Airways. The panel was installed in the W.H. Smith boardroom in the autumn of 1931. According to Gill's ledger, he was paid £765 - around £42,000 in today's money - a small fortune. Max Gill died in 1947 and was survived by his second wife, Priscilla (née Johnston). The collection of artworks and memorabilia she saved has been displayed in a series of exhibitions around the country in recent years and led to a dramatic upsurge in interest from collectors as well as the general public./ Copyright: Caroline M Walker, great-niece of MacDonald Gill, biographer and archivist: www.macdonaldgill.com

Churchill (Winston Spencer, 1874-1965). The Second World War, 6 volumes written out in manuscript longhand into 2 large day books and a ledger, by an unidentified hand, circa 1950s, a right-sloping neat hand in mostly blue or black fountain pen inks with occasional red highlights, etc., seemingly an unabridged and full transcription (except some quoted sources typed up on separate loose sheets in a folder), written on both sides of approximately 800 leaves of 3 ledgers/day books, volumes 1 and 2 of the magnum opus written into one day book, volume 3 into a ledger (damp-frayed at lower margins), volumes 4-6 written into a second day book matching the first (with printed columns for rooms, wines, accounts, etc.), this final volume following straight on with full-length transcriptions of 4 other of Churchill's works in the same hand, 'My Early Life', 'Thoughts and Adventures', 'Great Contemporaries' and 'Step by Step', approximately 150 blank leaves at rear of volume 3, contemporary quarter leather, some soiling and wear, volumes 1 & 3 with printed stationer's labels of Arthur Wrigley, Leeds, at front, large 4to (49 x 41 cm), volume 2 folio (47 x 30 cm), together with a folder of related typed leaves supplying many of the quoted sources for which coded references are left in the manuscript(Qty: 3)A truly bizarre Churchill archive, this three-volume manuscript raises unanswerable questions of authorship and appropriation. The Second World War alone totals over 1.5 million words and what person would voluntarily, (or otherwise), attempt to rewrite all this verbatim in longhand defies all logic and explanation. The handwriting is not Churchill's, nor any of his known secretaries, according to the Churchill Archives, Cambridge. Besides which Churchill's modus operandi for writing was dictation to typists in the first instance, which was then hand corrected by Churchill, retyped and corrected once more. Even with the large team of researchers involved in the preparation of The Second World War there would have been no call for such a manuscript. The inclusion of full transcriptions of four further and earlier works by Churchill adds to the bafflement. The ledgers were acquired around 20 years ago from a large house clearance near York. There are two clues as to who the author may be, both possibly in the same hand as the manuscript itself: The name 'Philip H. [?]Richings' appears on the front free endpaper of the second day book, and a three-page manuscript poem ('An Ode to Sir Barnes [Wallis]'), included with the folder of typed quoted sources, is initialled 'P.H.R.' at the end.

An early carved stone head raised upon a large rectangular stone plinth base with canted corners and angular top, the face although weathered, worn and verdigris'd still defined with eyes, nose, mouth and some hair etc., but the right hand side of the headdress has suffered some damage and some stonework is away towards the lower left hand cheek area, the stone head approx. 34cm high x 53cm (widest), the plinth base 64cm wide x 27cm high, Provenance: the present vendor's report the stone head first came into their possession in 1976 when the purchased Furze Hill House in Shipton-upon-Stour. This house was originally built in 1865 for the local MP, the same date that St. Edmund's Church was rebuilt. In the grounds of Furze Hill, there were also a few ledger stones and so it would seem reasonable to assume that they all originated from the rebuild of St. Edmunds that was originally built in the mid 15th Century, circa 1450. As yet, the image is unidentifiable but it is possibly the stonemason's idea of one of the queens of the time. The headdress appears to be a caul which was fashionable exclusively amongst upper class women in the 14th Century (see Rosalie's Medieval Women). Another interesting point is that the headdress appears in "English Costume History" by Dion Clayton Caithrop who dates this style circa 1327-1485.
