Lot 533

Northern Italy, Villanovan culture, ca. 800-700 BC. A black kyathos, a single-handled dipper with an interestingly-shaped conical foot of openwork design. This is a very early example of a vessel shape that would later become highly refined by the Etruscans and then the Greeks, and the handle here, which in later versions towered high above the body of the vessel, is small and looped. The body is made of impasto, a coarse earthenware that is a precursor to Etruscan Bucchero. The Villanovans inhabited Italy during the early Iron Age, and much of what we know of them comes from excavations of cemeteries (the first at Villanova near Bologna in northern Italy) where they cremated the dead and buried them in pottery urns in a very distinctive, double-cone shape. In the 8th century, Greek colonists arrived in the region, and began to influence Villanovan ceramics and their forms, as with this kyathos.Size: L:120mm / W:210mm ; 625gProvenance: United States (Colorado) - Artemis Fallery, Fine Antiquities, Asian, Ethnographic Art Sale, 18 May 2017, lot 20; formerly in private Carlton collection, Los Angeles.

Lot 48

c.540-460 B.C. A terracotta kyathos or single-handled cup composed of a carinated body with deep shoulder, high handle, slender stem and broad foot. See Rasmussen, Bucchero Pottery from Southern Etruria, p.116; pl.36, no.203, is closest in form to this example (this is Rasmussen’s kyathos type 4b). 340 grams, 17.7 cm high (7 in). Private Orange County collection, USA. Ancient Resource, auction 28, 1 March 2014, lot 220. Private Australian collection. Accompanied by an illustrated two page collector's cataloguing document. Accompanied by a copy of the Ancient Resources listing. The kyathos was used to ladle wine mixed with water from a krater into a drinking cup. Rasmussen, ibid., notes that this is the commonest of the kyathoi in the first half of the sixth century, and most examples can be dated to this period. The type begins in the last quarter of the seventh century and may last up to the third quarter of the sixth. Rasmussen notes that the handle is given a plain crest or is simply thickened and is usually surmounted by a flat button as in this instance. Such pieces may be undecorated or, alternatively, have incised lines or vertical striations on the bowl, as well as groups of incised lines. Turfa, Catalogue of the Etruscan Gallery, p.199, suggests that this simple form with the flattened crest or button on top of the handle, the most canonical of its category, seems to have been made in Caeretan workshops, and probably elsewhere; Tarquinian examples were more ornate. There are many parallels and variants on this type. Examples include CVA Parma – Museo di Antichità II, pl.6.5 (Inv. C.308), height 17.0cm, dated to the second half of the sixth century; example from first half of sixth century from Orvieto in the Etruscan Gallery at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology (MS 3214); published as no.202, in Turfa, ibid., p.199. Hayes, Etruscan and Italic Pottery in the Royal Ontario Museum, p.79, no.C27, is an example at 17.5cm high with two groups of four shallow grooves (in continuous spirals) around lower part of body. [No Reserve] For this specific lot, 5% import VAT is applicable on the hammer price Fine condition, handle restored.

Lot 11

Etruscan Kyathos. 6th-5th century BC. Black buccaneer ceramic. Measures: 15,5 x 18,5 x 13,5 cm. This type of vessels used to have a funerary use, although they also belonged to the wine services. The bucchero is a type of black pottery specific to the Etruscan civilization. Known since the 7th century B.C. Its firing method (in kilns between 900 °C and 1050 °C) turns the pottery black and makes it shine like metal. The Etruscan culture was already surrounded by an aura of mystery in antiquity; even their Greek contemporaries were intrigued by the sudden emergence of this people as a maritime and commercial power, by this ancient people who, according to Dionysius of Halicarnassus, "resemble no other in their language and customs". While there are those who consider them as the people that gave rise to the Roman Empire, there are other experts who give more relevance to the differences that exist between the two peoples and consider them mere neighbors or "conqueror and conquered", depending on the time in which one speaks, recognizing a strong influence of some elements of Etruscan culture and art observed on the Romans.

Lot 98

Great Crater of Columns; Greece, Attic, 5th century BC. Ceramics. Attached thermoluminescence certificate from QED Laboratoire. Measures: 51 x 45 cm. Large columned krater, attributed to the Painter of Florence (c. 465-440 B.C.) that appears decorated with scenes on each of its faces. The obverse, with a symposium scene showing three reclining men receiving the attentions of a young servant carrying an oinochoe for pouring wine and a maid playing the aulos (double flute). The figure of the central bearded man is also shown playing a chelys (Greek 8-stringed instrument). In the lower part, tables with kylix for drinking wine on them can be seen. The scene on the reverse shows three men in cloaks having a conversation. Two carry walking sticks on which they lean and between two of them is a strigilum that appears to be hanging on the wall. The scenes are framed by double vertical bands decorated with dots. The embouchure presents the same type of decoration but with horizontal bands. The neck of the obverse presents a wide band decorated with ovals arranged vertically and vertical black bands that narrow at the bottom. The piece presents restorations on fracture lines and some areas reconstructed with repainting, normal in this type of large pieces. Both the piece and the drawings are in a very good state of preservation. The Symposium was an event common to all ancient Greeks, who loved the joy of banquets on the occasion of family feasts, city festivals or any other event worthy of celebration: various successes, especially in the competitions of poets or athletes, the arrival or departure of a friend, etc.. The banquets (symposia) even gave rise to a literary genre, as evidenced, among others, by Plato's Banquet and Xenophon's Banquet, and much later Plutarch's Table Talks (Symposiac). The word symposium (Ancient Greek ?????????, sympósion), which we translate as banquet, properly means "gathering of drinkers". The crater was a type of Greek pottery intended to contain a mixture of water and wine, with which the cups were filled. It was moved to the place of the meal and placed on a dais or sometimes on the floor and the cupbearer administered the liquid with a spoon or kyathos, filling the cups of the diners.

Black Bucchero ware, like this kyathos, was produced in central Italy and is typical of the Etruscan period. Its black colour and shiny finish result from the absence of oxygen during the firing process [No Reserve] Fine condition.

Lot 11A

Classical World, Etruria, ca. early 6th century CE. A large kyathos, a drinking cup with a tall handle, in the glossy black style of Bucchero ware. This particular example has a low, wide foot and a tall loop handle decorated with a foliate finial (a common Etruscan symbol) and a little mask. The body also has a design of bulbous protrusions at regular intervals punctuated by masks; the finial shape is echoed around the rim. Size: 8.55" L x 6.35" W x 7.6" H (21.7 cm x 16.1 cm x 19.3 cm)Items like these were wheel-made, with a foot that was thrown separately on the wheel and joined to the rest of the body as the two pieces began to harden. It was then burnished with a slip and fired in a reducing atmosphere to produce this glossy black color, which is the famous Bucchero style. This kyathos almost certainly came from a funerary context, placed in an opulent Etruscan tomb as an offering. However, it was probably placed there because similar - or maybe even the same - vessels were used in life by the people of Etruria; items placed in the tomb were meant to be a link between the world of the living and the dead, and to help furnish a symbolic domestic space for the deceased. Provenance: Ex-Private Orange County, CA collection Condition: Repaired from multiple pieces, with some losses in the repaired areas. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
