A set of mid-19th Century surgeon`s instruments, including hacksaw, backsaw, three long knives marked `Salt & Son, Bull St` (one tip broken), trepanning instruments including two trephines, trephine handle and Hey saw, scalpels, tweezers, pliers, probes, bodkins and screw tourniquet, within a fitted brass-bound mahogany case, lined with red baize, with lift-out tray, case approx 40.5cm x 22.5cm x 8cm (some instruments missing, some replacements, some corrosion and minor faults).
Dennis Nilsen Letters; a collection of letters written by Dennis Nilsen immediately after his arrest, and during his imprisonment to a former work colleague. She regarded Nilsen merely as a working colleague, he however regarded her as a rare friend, hence the correspondence. Nilsen was convicted of the very gruesome murders of at least fifteen men and boys between 1978 and 1983. He was sentenced to life imprisonment and will never be released. He was arrested by Detective Chief Inspector Jay who is mentioned in the letters. In the lot there are eighteen letters and one Christmas card. In the letter Nilsen talks about his case and his intention to defend himself, he however later decided to appoint Ronald Moss as his defence. He also talks about prison life, the food, solitary confinement and his decision to create his own educational programme studying criminology as his subject on the basis that he was in an ideal place to study this subject. He also talks about the fate of his dog `Bleep`, who he regarded as his substitute child. The letters date from the 17th of February to the 4th of November 1983, also included is a Christmas card dated 16th December 1984 in which Nilsen has written a poem "Christmas time is something, almost tailor made, for sending someone pressies, perhaps a hacksaw blade?"
