Statisch aufrecht mit einer nahezu kokonartigen, in sich verwobenen Statur, blickt die "Kleine Stehende" den Betrachter gleichzeitig erhaben und verletzlich an. Sie erinnert an Bühls berühmte Köpfe, die bei einer ersten, flüchtigen Betrachtung Motorradhelmen gleichen, die Form auf das Wesentliche reduziert und durch eine wirkungsvoll bearbeitete Oberfläche glänzend. EINSTEIN ELSA: (1876-1936) Cousin and the second wife of Albert Einstein, married from 1919-36. A brief A.L.S., Elsa Einstein, one page, 8vo, n.p., n.d. (c.1933), to a lady, most probably Juliette Adant, wife of Professor Arthur de Groodt, in French. Einstein writes, in full, 'Cette petite boite (mosaigue en bois) represente une faible preuve de ma gratitude' (Translation: 'This little box (wooden mosaic) represents a feeble proof of my gratitude'). Together with two original 3.5 x 2.5 and 4.5 x 3 photographs showing different views of the same house, possibly situated in De Haan, Belgium. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VG, 3Juliette De Groodt-Adant (1892-1964) Belgian writer, wife of the Flemish doctor Arthur de Groodt (1883-1952). In March 1933 Albert and Elsa Einstein returned to Europe from America and learned that Hitler had seized power and that the Gestapo had raided their Berlin apartment, confiscating many possessions. Landing in Antwerp, Belgium, Albert Einstein immediately visited the German consulate and surrendered his passport, formally renouncing his German citizenship. At the invitation of Arthur de Groodt and his wife (who counted Rabindranath Tagore amongst their friends) Albert and Elsa Einstein stayed for a few days at Cantecroy Castle before Juliette De Groodt-Adant suggested that they hire two cottages in De Haan, the Villa Savoyarde for the Einsteins and the Maisonette for themselves. The Einstein's stayed in the West Flanders municipality for six months before departing for London in September 1933.

The Einstein's stayed in the West Flanders municipality for six months before departing for London in September 1933.  On 3rd October 1933, Einstein delivered a speech on the importance of academic freedom before a packed audience at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Four days later he returned to America with his wife and took up a position at the Institute for Advanced Study, noted for having become a refuge for scientists fleeing Nazi Germany. Einstein's association with the Institute at Princeton University would last until his death in 1955.

(c.1933), to a lady, most probably Juliette Adant, wife of Professor Arthur de Groodt, in French. Solcherart spektakuläre, knorrige Eichen im Vordergrund finden sich besonders in den 1640er Jahren häufiger im Werk Jan van Goyens, etwa in der "Landschaft mit zwei Eichbäumen" von 1641 (Beck 1973, S. 499, Nr. 1144). Auch das Motiv einer strohgedeckten Scheune in den Dünen ist bereits in den 1630er Jahren ein beliebtes Sujet, etwa in einem heute in der Eremitage, Sankt Petersburg, befindlichen Gemälde Goyens (Eremitage, Sankt Petersburg, Inv.-Nr. 806).Jan van Goyen gilt neben Salomon van Ruysdael (um 1601 - 1670) als der bedeutendste Vertreter der sogenannten "tonalen Landschaftsmalerei" des 17. Jahrhunderts. Mit seinem äußerst geschickt eingesetzten Wechsel von Licht und Schatten in einer sparsamen Farbpalette wurde er prägend für die holländische Landschaftsmalerei.Selbst in der Fülle der hervorragenden Werke von Zeitgenossen und von ihm beeinflussten Malern, sind van Goyens Gemälde unverwechselbar. Bemerkenswert ist, wie auch in späterer Zeit sein Werk eine Wiederbelebung im Impressionismus und höchste Verehrung unter späteren Künstlern fand. Vincent van Gogh etwa drückte seine Bewunderung für den Maler in einem Brief an seinen Bruder Theo aus: "Wie gut tut es, an Leute wie van Goyen zu denken!"
