A violin, probably by F.W. Chanot, London 1900, after G. Guarneri the two piece back 14in. long, with label to interior inscribed "Copy of Giuseppa Guarneri for Some Time in the possession of my father F.W. Chanot 1900", with a bow and black case with label for Edward WithersThe luthier Frederic-William Chanot (1857-1911) continued the work of his father Georges Chanot who had premises in London from 1851 gaining a strong reputation for fine copies of Cremonese instruments by Stradivari and Guarneri.

Marca tipografica al frontespizio (sporadiche fioriture e bruniture, piccolo foro di tarlo al margine bianco di alcune carte.) Legatura coeva in piena pergamena semi-rigida con unhiatura e tracce di due bindelle (sguardie rinnovate). Prima edizione poco comune in bella copia che vede una traduzione francese pubblicata nel 1685 e una inglese nel 1687. Starting price: 150

A good modern Italian violin by Giorgio Scolari of Cremona, Guarneri model, the table of medium grained Italian spruce and with a two piece Italian maple back, length of back 35.6cm. This lot is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity and a receipt dated 10/9/1983 when it was bought directly from the maker by the present vendor, together with two letters from the maker
HILL, William Henry [et al] THE VIOLIN-MAKERS OF THE GUARNERI FAMILY (1626-1762) THEIR LIFE AND WORK. William E. Hill & Sons, Violin-Makers, London, 1931. First edition, first printing. 4to. A superb piece of book production: the letterpress and some collotypes were printed by John Johnson at the Oxford University Press; the remaining collotypes and the photogravures were printed by Emery Walker; the colour plates by Hudson and Kearns. Former owner's name to the front free endpaper, otherwise internally very fine indeed in the original quarter vellum lettered gilt, with sage-green art silk sides, with the Guarneri armorial device in full colour on the upper cover. With two interesting letters to the former owner from William E. Hill & Sons laid in.
