CHINESE ARTIST (CIRCA 1800)A set of Four Chinese FiguresOil on copper alloy, each with painted inscription in Spanish on a cartouche below the figure, in original frames. 60cm (23 1/2in) high x 45cm (17 3/4in) wide. (4).Footnotes:中國藝術家(約1800年) 中國人物像一組四件 銅板油畫 有框Provenance: a Spanish private collectionMartyn Gregory, London來源:西班牙私人收藏倫敦古董商 Martyn GregoryPublished, Illustrated and Exhibited: Martyn Gregory, China in the Frame, London, 2020-2021, p.73, no.75展覽著錄: Martyn Gregory,《China in the Frame》,倫敦,2020-2021年,第73頁,編號75Each painting has an inscription in Spanish which reads as follows:1. 'Laypu Song Su / Primer Ministro de la Corte de Pekin' ('First minister of the Court at Peking')2. 'Muger de Sopu, o Administrador general de Aduana / enChina'('Wife of Sopu, Administrator-general of Customs in China')3 'Labrador' ('Labourer')4.'Muger de sastre'(Tailor's wife')This unique and striking set of paintings was evidently created for the Spanish market. China and Spain have a long history of interactions, which gained new momentum with the establishment of the Real Compañía de Filipinas in 1785. This development bolstered Spanish trade in Canton, where a Spanish Factory was established in 1788. By then, Cantonese export artists had begun painting in oils on canvas, though they continued to experiment with other materials. Several Chinese export paintings on metal alloy sheets survive, particularly miniature topographical scenes, which appear to date from the early 19th century. Notably, these paintings are preserved in their original Chinese frames. Each painting in the set features a parapet with a unique design, separating the foreground figure from a background of a river flowing past elegant residences and tree-lined banks. Painting no.3, titled 'Labrador,' is particularly interesting: it depicts a figure operating a foot-powered grinder. In this device, rice grains are hulled, sieved, and pounded in a stone mortar. Similar apparatus is illustrated in Song Yingxing's encyclopedic Tiangong Kaiwu, 1637; see, Sung Ying-hsing, T'ien-kung k'ai-wu. Chinese Technology in the Seventeenth Century, 1966 ed., figs.4-10 and 4-11). The text explains that 'the pestle is affixed to a cross beam (the tip of the pestle is made of iron and glued on with vinegar dregs) and is operated by foot. Too little pounding will result in unpolished grains, and too much in fragmentary ones' (p.93).For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
