H23.5cm.ProvenanceThe ewer is accompanied by a handwritten letter dated 1911 and reading "I sold this old blue porcelaine vase to Miss Neste Evans, which I bought from the Bedouin husband of the late Lady Digby, Salim Hahim" (in English and Arabic).Lady Jane Digby, born in 1807, received a good education, unusual for women at the time, and excelled at languages. She was presented at court at the age of 16, married several times in England and across Europe, and finally travelled as a divorced woman to the Holy Land. Famously, she set off on her greatest adventure on camel to Palmyra, dressed in local attire, and eventually married the Arab sheikh Medjuel el Mezrab.Having acquired the ewer as in the letter above, it remained in the family of Miss Eleanor Neste Evans, 1878-1963, and thus passed to the current vendors, her Great Grandchildren. Eleonor Evans also travelled widely, visiting Japan, Hong Kong, Hawaii, Canada, and Syria, amongst others, in the early 20th century. It was in Damascus that she acquired the vase as described in her detailed journal:24th March 1911: "'Grandpa' was to-day determined to take us to see his own house… there he showed us old Arabic tiles, Syrian daggers, and most interesting of all several pieces of Chinese porcelain that he bought at the sale of Lady Digby's things. I think I must buy one of these pieces, if only for the history attached to it. 'Grandpa' says she lived in Damascus in the winter, and the summer in a tent in the desert with her husband's Bedouin wife: extraordinary idea…"25th March: "Went again to old man's house, where he dressed up in lovely silk robes… Glad I am not one of his women-folk, he is very snappy with them. I have bought the blue vase that was once Lady Digby's."Cf.: Krahl & Ayers, Chinese Ceramics in the Topkapi Saray Museum, Vol II, pp 819-820.
