A collection of Ethnographica/Tribal items including two hide shields, two spears, fly whisks, hide bowl and cover and a wooden two section bowl CONDITION REPORTS Red and black painted shield measures approx 58 cm x 83 cm. Has areas of hair protruding from the skin as well as fluff etc attached. Some cracking to the leather and the wooden mount/handle to the interior has several splits to them. Leather is coming away to the middle section around the wooden mount. Longer thinner shield measures approx 32 cm x 86 cm excluding wooden mount. There is section of threading missing to the centre of the shield. Discolouration and staining throughout. Several large scratches and cuts to the leather as well as various splits. Is fairly wrinkled and discoloured and marked variously to the front and the back. Some of the stitching is coming away. The wooden handle is broken in the centre. The wooden bowl has a large crack/repair to one area. Leather lidded vessel - the stitching is coming away. there are various holes to the leather wear etc throughout. some of the strapping is split and worn. Stringing inside has wear and tear. The two spears have pitting and rusting throughout and the handles have some blackening, scuffs and scratches. asll items have wear and tear conducive with age and use - see images for more details

Tribal Art/Ethnographica/Oceanic interest: A lovely Fijian ironwood gunstock war club, 19th century or earlier. Good patination from age. Typical form with curved shaft and blade, crosshatched designs. Measures approx. 101cm in length. Provenance: vendor's ancestor was a Chief Engineer in the Merchant Navy, and brought this object back from his travels.Condition Report: Nicely patinated from age, few age cracks.
Tribal/Ethnographica/Oceanic interest: A rare collection of early 20th-century photographs depicting Maori villages, 'food stores', 'cooking pools', groups of natives, carved fortifications and 'look-out towers'. The photographs feature contemporary inscriptions to the verso, with one example discussing a traditional village and its vulnerable status: 'English homes have of late years been replacing these picturesque places of abode.'Condition Report: Good, striking images that have survived well.
Tribal/Ethnographica/Oceanic interest: 'Maori Patterns Painted and Carved', John Henry Menzies [1910]. Smith and Anthony Ltd. Unbound pages in original cloth folder; beautiful lithographic plates depicting various striking designs. Original owner inscription in pencil - it was sent home to England as a Christmas present in 1910.Condition Report: Contents good and bright considering age, folder has a little discolouration/light wear.
African/Tribal/Ethnographica interest: A very important and unique collection of African beadwork dating from c.1900, to include bamboo nose decoration with carved/engraved decoration. This is a large collection comprising a number of items (ranging from necklaces to coverings and bags), all exhibiting colourful and striking patterns. Provenance: the vendor's great uncle, Samuel Ewart Band (born in Derby 1868), worked for the Durban Corporation of Natal and the Corporation of the City of Maritzburg, being appointed as Clerk of Works for the City Waterworks scheme. The beadwork was given to him in 1900 at the change of his employment by Zulu workers; he treasured these items more than anything else he had. The vendor has kindly included some photocopies of newspaper clippings and photographs relating to his great uncle's work in Africa. Sixteen individual items in total.
