Colvin Smith, 1795-1875, Portrait of William, 15th Lord Elphinstone (1828-1893), later inscribed with the identity of the sitter, oil on canvas, 141x110cm.; 55.5x43.25in. The sitter was the son of James Drummond Fullerton-Elphinstone, and his second wife, Anna Maria, the only child of Admiral Sir Edward Buller, Bt, MP. He succeeded his cousin John Elphinstone Fleming, 14th Lord Elphinstone, who died unmarried in 1861. He married Constance Euphemia, the second daughter of the 6th Earl of Dunmore in 1864.

The sitter was the son of James Drummond Fullerton-Elphinstone, and his second wife, Anna Maria, the only child of Admiral Sir Edward Buller, Bt, MP. He succeeded his cousin John Elphinstone Fleming, 14th Lord Elphinstone, who died unmarried in 1861. After a decorated career in the Royal Navy, where he held the rank of Captain and received the 5th Class of the Turkish Order of the Medjidie, he was created Baron Elphinstone in 1885. He married Constance Euphemia, the second daughter of the 6th Earl of Dunmore in 1864.
