Portrait of the Irish Actor Charles Macklin Oil on canvas, within a painted oval30 x 25 inches (76.2 x 63.5 cm) Frame 36 1/2 x 31 1/4 inches (92.8 x 79.5 cm)Provenance: Gooden and Fox, London [Sale] Christie's London, July 4, 1911, lot 55, as by John OpieCharles Macklin (1699-1797) was born into a family of impoverished Irish gentry in County Donegal. His family soon moved to Dublin, where he attended school and later worked as a servant at Trinity College. Around 1708 he left Ireland for England, working at whatever jobs he could find. By 1720 he had made his way to the theater, appearing with various companies touring the British provinces. In 1733 his career received a lift, owing to an actors' strike at the Drury Lane theater in London. The sudden departure of most of the resident company left the theater in desperate need of players, an opening that allowed Macklin to take on substantial roles for which he normally would have had to wait for years. In 1740, Macklin first appeared as Shylock in The Merchant of Venice, which he played with such riveting animus that it transformed Macklin from a work-a-day performer to a leading light of the London stage. Audiences loved his portrayal of Shakespeare's villain, a role that would become a staple of his repertoire for the next half-century. Macklin's later life was marred by a succession of quarrels, lawsuits, a venomous feud with his colleague and one-time friend David Garrick, and increasingly poor health. His last performance was on May 7, 1789, as Shylock, which he was forced to interrupt owing to his inability to remember his lines--a sad ending to the career of one of the titans of the 18th-century English theater. Glue relined. Dense, old varnish layer, very hard to read through under UV light. Some shadows possibly reinforced.

Nutter, published 14 April 1801 (“from the original picture in the possession of the Marquis of Thomond”). Elizabeth Hartley (née White) (1750?–1824) was one of the most celebrated actors on the London stage in the 1700s. She was also notorious for the role she played in society scandals including ‘The Vauxhall Affray’. Hartley was the daughter of James and Eleanor White of Berrow, Somerset, England. She later took the name Hartley, but it is not known from whom. Various suggestions have been made including the master to whom she was a chambermaid, and other actors of a similar name. There are also no reliable sources for her early roles until she appeared in Edinburgh, on 4 December 1771, as Monimia in Thomas Otway’s The Orphan. After a season in Edinburgh she moved to Bristol where David Garrick, who had heard of her remarkable beauty, commissioned the actor John Moody to attend a performance and report back to him. ‘She has a husband,’ wrote Moody in a letter to George Garrick dated 26 July 1772, ‘a precious fool, that she heartily despises’ (Garrick I, 1835, p. 476) but in fact they never actually married. In the same letter, Moody described her as having ‘a good figure, with a handsome small face, and very much freckled; her hair red, and her neck and shoulders well-turned.’ She is, he wrote, ‘ignorant and stubborn ... and has a slovenly good nature about her that renders her prodigiously vulgar.’ Nevertheless, David Garrick was impressed: ‘A finer creature than Mrs Hartley,’ he exclaimed, ‘I never saw. Her make is perfect’ (W. T. Whitley, Artists and their friends in England 1700-1799, 2 vols, London 1928, vol, 2, pp. 149-50). Northcote described her, in a letter to his brother Samuel, 24 Mar. 1773, as ‘one of the most beautiful women I ever saw, and the finest figure, but [she| has not a good voice’ (Whitley, vol. 2, p. 295). She worked at the Covent Garden theatre in a numerous roles until 1780 (see below), and also appeared at Drury Lane, Liverpool and Stroud. She left the stage at the close of the season of 1779–80 when aged only 30, possibly due to ill health. She died at her home in King Street, Woolwich, and was buried in the Union Chapel. Her portrait by Angelica Kauffmann hangs in the Garrick Club; a long list of other portraits of her, mostly in character parts, is given in P. H. Highfill et alii, Biographical dictionary of actors, managers and other stage personnel in London 1660-1800, Carbondale, Illinois, 1973.The present painting is certainly listed twice as nos. 854a and 852d in Mannings’s catalogue raisonné on the artist, with slightly different dimensions in each entry. These entries represent the same painting, as Mannings himself suggested might be the case. The stretcher on the reverse of the present painting has the stencil numbers 993B and 190ER as well as the chalk mark “June 8/28”. These relate without question to the Christie’s sales on 18 May 1821 and 8th June 1928 thereby confirming the provenance for this painting. Mannings wasn’t aware of any of this at the time of his catalogue raisonné as he did not have direct access to the front and back of the painting.

The large panel was generally ascribed to Leonardo da Vinci, and was included as such by Gavin Hamilton in his collection of engravings of works by important Italian painters, the Schola Italica Picturae of 1770, at which point Modesty and Vanity hung in the Palazzo Barberini, Rome. The Rothschild painting is now thought to depict Saints Martha and Mary who, along with their brother Lazarus, welcomed Jesus into their home as their guest. The younger of the two sisters, Mary, is depicted in this and the Rothschild work wearing costly and elaborate costume whereas Martha, traditionally considered to be the more modest of the two, is seen reproaching her younger sister, Mary, for her sinful lifestyle.According to the Locko Park catalogue, either this painting or that of Saint Martha was exhibited under the name of Leonardo da Vinci in an exhibition of paintings from private collections in the cloisters of Santissima Annunziata, Florence, in the second half of the 19th century. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

HARRISON REX: (1908-1990) English actor, famous for his portrayal of Professor Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady (1964). Academy Award winner. An excellent, lengthy A.L.S., Rex, eight pages, 8vo, Toronto, 30th October [1953], to Binkie [Beaumont], on the printed bifolium stationery of the Royal York Hotel. Harrison states that he has received his correspondent´s wire and letter and firstly responds to the former, stating ´I´m glad you feel that way. I would, of course, have told you about the possibility of the Korda film earlier had I seen a script. I am now awaiting its arrival, which will not be for several weeks as Sydney Gilliat is penning it for me as I write. Nothing will be decided till it arrives, obviously´. Harrison continues his letter with a discussion regarding the casting of an aunt (Miss. Holroyd) in the play Bell, Book and Candle, ´Really - what a silly old bag Miss. Rutherford has turned out to be - "Useless and Selfish" - what kind of play does she think this is? Oh well, I suppose we´d better hang on to her in case - but my thoughts are these - (and surely there is no need to cast it till the spring). The play´s best with a timid Aunt. An Aunt who has recently started in a small way the art of witchery, and isn´t very good at it! Eager and absolutely loves it, but not really a driving personality. I could, I´m sure, adapt it to a driver such as Rutherford, and I´m not saying that the play mightn´t get additional bounces but, from a purist standpoint give me a timid mouse every time - in other words Miss. Aked or her equivalent. After all the play didn´t suffer in New York when we had an old lady of over seventy who was stone blind! I would very much like to see Miss. Aked and talk to her when I get back, surely sixty-six isn´t too old. Binkie dear, I´m afraid I don´t think Sybil, Miss Ffranco-Davis (sic). Miss Lohr or Zena even remotely right. The part is in no way written for "seedy grandeur" but for sweet, kind, timid, bumbling, mouse. Perhaps Miss. Seyler is nearer, but , alas, I haven´t seen her act for centuries. Miss. Patricia Collinge I´m afraid I have never even heard of, let alone seen. However I´m prepared, if you wish it, to see her in New York. Is she acting now?´ Harrison continues his letter writing ´So glad Johnnie V. D. is flashing! I trust tho´ he will not even give the tiniest spark while I am attempting to re-stage his play. He can be a very tiresome and irritating old thing. Let´s hope his English success hasn´t gone to his head! I think that´s all.....Don´t forget, above everything I want Wilfred Lawson for "Redlitch". How is he bearing up? We are a riot in Canada, selling out.....Have had Saddlers (sic) Wells against us, and have been with Margot and Freddie´. A letter of excellent theatrical content. A few small, very minor pinholes to the upper corners, otherwise VGBinkie Beaumont (1908-1973) British theatre manager and producer, a co-founder of the theatrical management company H. M. Tennent in 1936.Margaret Rutherford (1892-1972) English character actress, Academy Award winner. Harrison refers to a whole host of other actresses in his letter, including Muriel Aked (1883-1955), Sybil Thorndike (1882-1976), Gwen Ffrangcon-Davies (1891-1992), Marie Lohr (1890-1975), Zena Dare (1887-1975), Athene Seyler (1889-1990) and Patricia Collinge (1892-1974).John Van Druten (1901-1957) English playwright and theatre director. At the time of the present letter Van Druten had re-staged his production of The King and I at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, where it ran for 946 performances.Rex Harrison was appearing at the Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto, Ontario, in a production of The Love of Four Colonels in October 1953. The Sadler´s Wells Ballet company, featuring Margot Fonteyn and Frederick Ashton, were undertaking an American tour during 1953.John Van Druten´s play Bell, Book and Candle was first performed at the Ethel Barrymore theatre on Broadway in November 1950 and starred Rex Harrison in the role of Shepherd Henderson, opposite Harrison´s wife at the time, Lilli Palmer, who portrayed Gillian Holroyd. Harrison went on to direct a West End production of the play at London´s Phoenix theatre in October 1954, which was presented by Binkie Beaumont´s H. M. Tennent. This version relocated the action from Manhattan to Knightsbridge and the forename of the leading male character was changed from Shepherd to Anthony. Harrison and Palmer reprised their roles, Wilfrid Lawson portrayed Sidney Redlitch and the part of Miss. Holroyd (Aunt Queenie) was finally given to Athene Seyler.

A 19th century Staffordshire lion and lamb figurine by John & Rebecca Lloyd. Circa 1850, the lion is raised on a rounded rectangular stand with a green top, decorated with a gilt leaf and borders, 10cm highNote: John & Rebecca Lloyd founded the Lloyd Shelton Factory in 1834. They pioneered the 'shredding' technique, by applying thin shreds of unglazed porcelain to figures, creating the appearance of matted hair. It is thought that this model was inspired by Van Amburg, an American lion tamer, who performed at Drury Lane in 1836. His signature feat was to make the lions lie down with a lamb without killing it. Condition Report: Appears in very good condition for its age, no cracks or restoration, small chps to the bottom front corners, a little loss to his mane at the back, guilding is rubbed in places, light surface marks, glaze has crazed on the plinth.
