WWII double-sided silk Chindit Panic map 'North Burma' and 'Central Burma', with notation in ink, 983331 Sgt. Murphy, Wingates Army, 1944, size of scarf 59cm x 72cm, This orange escape map was unique to the Chindits, the purpose of which is explained in Richard Rhodes James's book Chindit; Above there came the sound of planes and a Dakota appeared over the jungle followed by several others. These planes had been sent to drop more supplies on the block. Base had no knowledge of the events of the last twenty-four hours, having been out of communication, and could only assume that, though our position was grave, it was not helpless. As a matter of fact when we moved off so hurriedly a message was on its way from the General giving s permission to withdraw. We produced our 'panic maps' (silk emergency maps of bright orange colour) and started waving them. The first few lanes did not see us and we watched the parachutes floating into the hands of the Japs. But one sharp-eyed pilot noticed the streaks of orange in the nullah and emptied his load beside us. Rippingale has further added a note Cloth Map issued to the Chindits - 1944. (Also used, tied round the neck as a sweat-rag. Robert George Murphy joined the forces in March of 1940. He went on to serve all over the world most frequently posted to South Africa and admitted to hospital on several occasions. He constantly volunteered for dangerous situations, hence his time in Burma. He died at the age of 66 in Townsville Australia

Dean Rag Book Co - an early 20th century Tru To Life stuffed cloth girl doll, 60 cm long; another a Lupino Lane " The Lambeth Walk stuffed cotton Doll, labelled to foot, 28cm long (2)This doll represents Lupino Lane as Bill Snibson in the original production of Noel Gay's Me and My Girl which opened at London's Victoria Palace Theatre in December 1937. The musical comedy was a huge success, running until 1940 and making its cheerful Cockney ' Lambeth Walk' number into an instant hit.Lupino Lane (1892-1959) was the son of the clown Harry Lupino and the nephew of the theatre manager Sara Lane. He appeared at the London Pavilion in 1903 as 'Nipper' Lane and by the 1920s was a popular performer in the West End and in films. His long list of successful comedy parts was nevertheless eclipsed by his triumph as the Cockney who finds himself one of the aristocracy. The show celebrated its 1000th performance on 26 July 1939, and it may well have been for that occasion that these dolls were made to give to the audience. The Victorian producer George Edwardes inaugurated the system of giving souvenirs to his audiences for special occasions, giving Geisha dolls representing various characters in the cast to every audience member to celebrate the 600th performance of The Geisha.

A very rare Caughley tea bowl in the 'Trench Mortar' pattern, circa 1790-98, unmarked, 8cm diameter (hairline) Provenance: Wright Collection no.582 purchased 1998 from S. Millington. Literature: This is the only piece of Caughley known to demonstrate this pattern, otherwise better known on hard-paste porcelain from the New Hall factory. A pull from a copper plate has recently been found in the Coalport Rag Book, confirming a Shropshire origin. The Rag Book is held at the Wedgwood Museum and contains patterns from both the Caughley and Coalport factories. The paste of this bowl together with the nature of the potting and the foot-rim suggest a Caughley rather than Coalport origin, although some remain sceptical of this attribution.' The Caughley Society, Caughley Blue and White Patterns, p.183 has a full page illustration and discussion of this tea bowl.
