CRYSTAL ETCHED GLASS DECANTER AND SET OF FIVE DRINKING GLASSES

East Asia, China, Warring States Period to early Han Dynasty, ca. 475 BCE to 43 CE. A extremely rare example of a rock crystal ear cup (known as "erbei") of an ovoid form. The curved-bottomed cup has gently expanding walls which taper towards the top and create the thin rim from which a pair of semicircular "ear" handles project. The rock crystal is clear and translucent but has faint red/orange age deposits on its surface that give it a glass-like appearance. Cups like this example were heavily employed by the Chu peoples and were traditionally used for drinking wine, and the purpose of the handles was to provide stability so that none of the liquid was spilled. A CHINESE IMPERIAL FACETED YELLOW BEIJING GLASS BOTTLE VASE FOUR CHARACTER QIANLONG MARK AND OF THE PERIOD 1736-95 With a bulbous octagonal body with a long slender neck raised on a tall foot, with a four character mark in a square border incised to the base, together with a reticulated wood stand, 15cm. A similar vase was sold at Christie's Hong Kong on 1st December 2010, lot 2925 and another on 28th May 2014, lot 2916 from the Edward T Chow Collection.   From the collection of Leonard Henry Pike and thence by descent.   Leonard Henry Pike (1885-1961), ‘Public Servant and Agent-General’, was born at Streatham in London in 1885. The day after his marriage to Lucy Raymond on 31st March 1910, he and his new wife emigrated to Australia. He worked in the Department of Justice, enlisting in the Australian Imperial Force during WWI. After the war he was went back into public service, working as an official secretary to three successive premiers, E. G. Theodore, W. N. Gillies and William McCormack. He organized official visits to Queensland, including the 1927 tour of the Duke and Duchess of York. In 1927 Pike was appointed official secretary to the Queensland agent-general's office in London. From 1928 he had been working in the sugar industry representing Australia on the International Sugar Council until 1952 as vice-chairman. Pike represented the Returned Sailors' and Soldiers' (and Airmen's) Imperial League of Australia on the British Empire Service League from 1927. In 1931-51 he was the Australian Football Association's delegate to the council of the Football Association in London. A proficient horseman, Pike was also a chorister, organist and newspaper columnist. A late 19th Century Thomas Webb & Sons 'Rock Crystal' type drinking glass with ogee bowl decorated by J. Palme with parrots in floral swags and borders, above an inverted baluster stem and circular foot with leaf decoration, engraved and acid marks, height 10cm.

A 19th Century clear crystal drinking glass by John Northwood, the slender round funnel bowl acid etched with a Greek Warrior with shield and spear between repeat borders, mounted to a slender slice cut stem abov e a circular spread foot. Etching glass by drawing a pattern in a layer of wax on the surface of the glass and then plunging it into hydrofluoric acid was first practised in the late 18th century. The process was developed commercially in the 1840s. By 1861 John Northwood (1836-1909) and James Northwood (1839-1915) at Wordsley, West Midlands, were among the first major producers to use it extensively. They had earlier invented the template etching machine for inscribing the pattern through the wax. With the invention in 1864 of a gear-driven, geometric etching machine, interlocking patterns such as loops or the ever-popular 'Greek key' border patterns were applied to virtually all table glass. They were used especially on the new paper-thin glass that appeared in the 1870s.

A large later 20th Century Kosta clear crystal glass vase designed by Vicke Lindstrand, of ovoid form with tapered foot, decorated all over with random planished effect polished cuts, engraved signature to the base, height 21cm.
