* JOSEF HERMAN OBE RA (POLISH/BRITISH 1911 - 2000), MOTHER & CHILD oil on board, titled versomounted, framed and under glassimage size 15cm x 9.5cm, overall size 33cm x 26cm Provenance: Valued and featured on BBC Antiques Roadshow 2013 Series 35 episode 14 venue Cawdor Castle where the valuation was "I can easily see that making £2000". After the program aired, the BBC received an email from the family of the mother and child depicted. The central text includes ".... drawing by Joseph Herman of a mother and child. My parents lived in South Wales in the late 40’s/early 50’s and knew Herman and his wife well. My father was an artist and worked closely with him. My mother recognised the drawing as it was of herself and first child, my elder brother, a bonny 65 year old now." A copy of the BBC email to the current vendor's family is available to the buyer as is a copy of the email received by the BBC from the son/brother of the mother/child depicted.Note: Polish-born painter who became a British citizen in 1948. He was born in Warsaw, the son of a Jewish cobbler, and studied at the Warsaw School of Art, 1930–31. In 1938 he moved to Brussels, then in 1940 to Glasgow, where he became a friend of another Polish refugee, Jankel *Adler. He moved to London in 1943, then from 1944 to 1953 lived in the Welsh mining village of Ystradgynlais. Ill health forced him to seek a drier climate and subsequently he lived in London and Suffolk. Herman is best known for his sombre pictures of Welsh miners, with whom he felt a strong affinity. He often showed their black figures silhouetted against the sun: ‘This image of the miners on the bridge against a glowing sky mystified me for years with its mixture of sadness and grandeur. ’ Michael Jacobs and Malcolm Warner write that ‘The harsh realities of life here provided a subject perfectly attuned to his expressionist style of painting. He feels that he has achieved a special empathy with the local inhabitants, and knew that he was accepted by them as soon as they referred to him by the affectionate nickname “Joe bach” (little Joe). Much of his time at Ystradgynlais was spent underground observing the life of the miners’ (The Phaidon Companion to Art and Artists in the British Isles, 1980). Herman made a considerable reputation with his mining scenes and was commissioned to paint a mural for the Festival of Britain in 1951 (Miners, Glynn Vivian Art Gallery and Museum, Swansea). In subsequent paintings he depicted the life of other working people he had seen on his extensive travels, which are documented in his book Related Twilights: Notes from an Artist's Diary (1975). He made an impressive collection of African sculpture and his figure style was to some extent based on it. More than one hundred works by Josef Herman are held in UK public collections.

An 1899 reproduction was placed on the wall of Lincoln College, Oxford and although that one is now inside the college, a copy has been installed in its place. The use of the image on silver is associated with the prominent Lincoln citizen James Ward Usher (1845-1921) who inherited a Jewellers and Watchmakers business in the City. In the late 19th century he acquired the sole right to reproduce the Lincoln Imp on jewellery and silver and letters addressed to ‘The Silversmith who makes and sells the Lincoln Imp’ and one with only a sketch of the Imp found their way to him. Usher's personal art collection was left to the City as 'The Usher Gallery' and from 2005 has been merged with the other museums in the City

* VICTOR VASARELY (HUNGARIAN/FRENCH 1908 - 1997), CODE, LE SOLEIL NOIR limited edition screenprint on paper, signed and numbered 125/150, from the Book of Poems with Jean Clarence Lambert, dated 1967 label versomounted, framed and under glass image size 38cm x 28cm, overall size 48cm x 36cm Label verso: Open Eye Gallery, Edinburgh.Note: Hungarian-born painter, sculptor, and designer who settled in Paris in 1930 and became a French citizen in 1959, the main originator and one of the leading practitioners of *Op art. He studied in Budapest at the Poldini-Volkman Academy of Painting and the Mühely School (known as the *Bauhaus of Budapest) before he settled in Paris in 1930. For the next decade he worked mainly as a commercial artist, particularly on the designing of posters, showing a keen interest in visual tricks and space illusions. From 1943 he turned to painting and he had his first one-man exhibition in 1944, at Denise *René's gallery. About three years later he adopted the method of geometrical abstraction for which he is best known. Typically he created a hallucinatory impression of movement through visual ambiguity, using alternating positive–negative shapes in such a way as to suggest underlying secondary shapes. His fascination with the idea of movement led him to experiment with *Kinetic art and he also collaborated with architects in such works as his relief in aluminium for Caracas University (1954), and the French Pavilion at ‘Expo '67’ in Montreal, hoping to create a kind of urban folk art. From 1961 Vasarely lived mainly in the South of France, where he founded two museums devoted to his work—the Fondation Vasarely at Aix-en-Provence, which he designed himself, and the Château and Musée Vasarely at Gordes (both are now closed). There are two Vasarely museums in Hungary, in Budapest and his birthplace Pecs. According to his obituary in The Times, ‘To him the artist was simply an artisan who creates his artefacts at will and in volume, so that they can be accessible to the ordinary person’.

NAPOLEON I: (1769-1821) Emperor of France 1804-14, 1815. An excellent and very clean L.S., `Bonaparte´, five pages, over two bifolium 4to, Paris, 29th April 1802, to the Minister of War, Berthier, in French. The letter bears an attractive Republican vignette to the heading, stating `Au nom du Peuple Français - Bonaparte Consul de la République”. Napoleon sends a very lengthy and interesting letter, showing once more the control he had in full detail of his troops, his working methods, and scolding his correspondent and Minister, requests a better and more precise work, stating in part `J´ai parcouru avec attention, Citoyen Ministre, les quatre états relatifs à la conscription dans les différents départements. I have carefully read, Citizen Minister, the four statements relating to conscription in the different departments. - 1º. All the departments are not included, first the four departments of the Rhine, then the departments of the West; so that instead of 102 departments there are only 86. - 2º. Piedmont is listed to recruit the corps in garrison; it is better, for this year, to list in full the demi-brigades and regiments that have been drawn from this country. - 3º. The departments of Corsica are listed to recruit the 23rd demi-brigade, which is in garrison there; on the contrary, the 23rd must be recruited in the Var, or better still in the Alpes-Maritimes, and a demi-brigade located in Nice or Provence must be recruited by the conscripts from Corsica; of course, they must be assigned to a demi-brigade of light infantry. - 4º. In this table, not enough attention has been paid to assigning mountainous regions to light infantry and plain regions to line infantry; for example, the 6th is assigned to Allier, which is an entirely plain region. It is essential to choose the thirty most mountainous localities to assign them to recruiting the thirty demi-brigades of light infantry. The work does not appear to have been done methodically....") Further, Napoleon continues pointing out the multiple mistakes and inconsistencies he has observed in the military report received from Berthier, and orders to work to be fully redone, stating in part `L´état nº 2, de trois colonnes, ne me parait point exact... The situation report No. 2, of three columns, does not seem exact to me... The 45th demi-brigade differs even more....it only needs 72 men to complete itself, and you carry 394 men in your state, it therefore only needs a sixth of what you carry... Thus, by the simple appearance of the reviews that you gave me yesterday, compared to your work, it results that the situation that you presented to me was made on false bases; it must therefore be redone on real bases...") An extremely interesting military content letter. Paper with watermark. Very small overall minor age wear, otherwise VG Louis Alexandre Berthier (1753-1815), Marshal of France, Prince of Neuchatel. Chief of Staff under Napoleon. At the time of the present letter Berthier was General and Minister of war 1800-07. He will be appointed Marshal two years later in 1804.

BAILLY JEAN SYLVAIN: (1736-1793) French astronomer and mathematician, a political leader during the early part of the French Revolution who served as the first Mayor of Paris 1789-91. Bailly was guillotined during the Reign of Terror. L.S., Bailly, as Mayor of Paris, one page, 4to, Paris, 6th August 1791, to unidentified correspondents, in French. The Municipal Office, Gentlemen, has received with the greatest interest your decree and the deputies that you sent to us to claim the remains of an estimable Citizen for whom you regret...... a very large deputation of the N[ational] Guard accompanied his convoy with the flags, they accompanied him to the barricade where they handed him over to the detachment that you had sent. The Town Council was delighted to find this opportunity to pay due homage to the memory of an esteemed Citizen and to give you an assurance of its fraternal feelings´). A collector´s small ink stamp to the verso has very slightly bled through to the recto and only very slightly affects the paraph of Bailly´s signature. Some light dust staining to the right edge. NAPOLEON I: (1769-1821) Emperor of France 1804-14, 1815. Very rare L.S., `Bonaparte´, one page, 4to, Paris, 1st of November 1801, to the Minister of war, Louis-Alexandre Berthier, in French. The letter bears an attractive Republican vignette to the heading, featuring Marianne, France's national symbol of liberty, seated with French republic symbols, and stating `Au nom du Peuple Français - Bonaparte Consul de la République''. Napoleon appoints several officers to the General Staff of the St Domingo troops, stating in part `Je vous prie, Citoyen Ministre, de donner l'ordre à trois adjoints de la garde des Consuls, dont deux chefs d'escadron et un capitaine, de se rendre à Brest pour être employés dans leurs grades dans l'Etat major de l'armée de St Domingue...´ (Translation: "I beg you, Citizen Minister, to send orders to three deputies of the Consuls' Guard, including two Chiefs of squadron and a Captain, to go to Brest to be employed in their ranks in the General Staff of the army of Santo Domingo...") [BRITISH SLAVERY]: GEORGE III: (1738-1820) King of Great Britain and Ireland 1760-1820. Large upper portion of a D.S., George R, as King (a good, large example), one page, oblong 4to (the original document being folio), n.p. (London?), n.d. (between July and November 1791). The manuscript text would appear to be largely complete, and certainly is in its thought, stating ´Whereas Our House of Commons did on the 6th of July last present an humble address to Us that We would be graciously pleased to give such Directions as We in Our great Wisdom should think proper fotr the relief of a Number of distressed black Persons and Persons of Color now in this Country and for sending them to such Place beyond Seas as should by Us be thought best adapted for that Purpose: and to assure Us that whatever Expence We should incur upon this Account Our said House would make good the same. Outr Will and Pleasure is that by Virtue of Our General Letters of Privy Seal bearing date the 5th of Novem[ber] 1760 You do issue and pay or cause to be issued and paid out of any [of] Our Treasure or Revenue in the Receipt of the Exchequer applicable to the Use of Our Civil Government unto Thomas Cotton Esq, or to his assigns the sum of Two hundred Pounds, six shillings and eight [pence]´. With two blind embossed revenue stamps to the left margin. A document of interesting text in which King George III gives financial support from his own Privy Purse for an abolitionist scheme (under the Sierra Leone Company, which was incorporated by Parliament in July 1791) to send back freed black slaves in Great Britain to West Africa, resettling them in Sierra Leone. Some fraying, a few tears, and small areas of paper loss to the edges, GThe growth of the black population in Great Britain in the eighteenth century eventually led to the abolitionist movement spearheaded by the scholar and philanthropist Granville Sharp (1735-1813). In 1772, slavery on British soil was deemed unlawful, largely due to Sharp´s efforts in the case of Somerset v Stewart. This meant that enslaved people who had been living in Britain (often working in domestic households) were liberated. Some became part of a subsection of people living in London in poverty, referred to as the ‘Black Poor’. The Committee for the Relief of the Black Poor was established in 1786 to offer financial and medical aid. It created a plan for the so-called ‘Black Poor’ to settle in Sierra Leone in West Africa. This scheme was supported by the government, as the present document illustrates. The naturalist Henry Smeathman chose Sierra Leone as a suitable location. The new colony was proclaimed as the ‘Province of Freedom’. However, Smeathman exaggerated its potential. The government encouraged the ‘Black Poor’ to join the resettlement scheme, which was financially supported by the Treasury, and issued each person with a certificate as a free citizen of the ‘Colony of Sierra Leone’. This was necessary because slavery was still in operation in Sierra Leone.

CAMBRAY ALEXIS PIERRE: (1760-1799) French General. He gained solid experience in Vendée in the campaigns against François de Charette. Cambray died at the early age of 39 at the Battle of Trebbia. A very interesting D.S. `Cambray´, two pages, 4to, Machecoult Head-Quarters, 27th December 1794, to the Commandant of the military forces in Pronay, in French. The partially printed document bears to the heading a republican vignette and the name of General CAmbray of the West Army. Cambray forwards to his correspondent the three articles of a decree with the important orders received, first explaining `Je t´adresse Citoyen, copie d´un arrêté que les représentants du peuple viennent d´ordonner de transmettre aux troupes qui sont sous mon commandement; tu tiendras la main à l´exécution bien précise de cet arrêté & tu m´en accuseras la réception sans délai.
