Nikiforos LYTRAS Greek, 1832 -1904   The artist signed lower right pencil on paper 13.5 x 7.5 cm   PROVENANCE private collection, Athens acquired by the present owner in 1976 from the son of Constantinos Maleas, Fotinos Maleas, as a set of three drawings in one frame. The original frame bears an inscription on the reverse. these drawings were verified by Dr Nelli Missirli. Other works from the same collection by Nikiforos Lytras are illustrated in the book of Lytras by Dr Nelli Missirli.    Nikiforos Lytras was born on the island of Tinos in 1832. At the age of eighteen he moved to Athens to study at The School of Fine Arts, where he completed his studies in 1856. Later in 1860 on a scholarship from the Greek government he went to Munich to study at The Royal Academy of Fine Arts. There, he was taught by Karl von Piloty. During that period Lytras focused on historically themed paintings. His subjects were inspired by Greek Mythology and history. In the summer of 1865 before returning to Greece he met Nicholaos Gysis in Munich and together they studied the masterpieces of German Museum collections. On his return to Athens, Lytras became a professor at The Athens School of Fine Arts in the department of painting, a position he held for the remainder of his life. Together with Nicholaos Gysis, he travelled to Asia Minor in 1873 and Paris in 1876. After returning to Greece, Lytras worked on portraiture, still life and everyday scenes. Lytra’s paintings on everyday life correspond with the ideology against the ruling class at the time. His trips to Asia Minor and Egypt informed his paintings in depicting children of colour and other elements of Anatolia. During the final period of his life he painted many scenes that explored aging, loneliness and fear of death. In 1879 he married Irene Kyriakidi, the daughter of a tradesman from Smyrna, together they had six children. Lytras was one of the greatest Greek painters. His contribution in almost forty years of teaching was also of great importance, as he not only influenced younger generations, but was involved in the school’s restructuring. Lytras died at the age of 72 (in 1904), after a brief illness that is believed to have been caused by chemicals found in paint.

[Jane Austen Family]. General Account Book of Rents &c in Bucks, Hants, Suffolk &c belonging to William Vigor, of Basingstoke, Hampshire, fl. 1830s, October 1835 to October 1844, and containing letterbook correspondence of William Edward Vigor, Rector of Botus Fleming, Cornwall, fl. 1851-90, March 1865 to March 1876, autograph manuscript, a total of 77 pp. excluding blanks, in two hands, including references to rent of a house in Basingstoke by 'Mrs Lefroy', paper watermarked 'W. Bickford 1837', Plymouth Bookseller's invoice made out to Rev. W.E. Vigor loosely inserted (Michaelmas 1887), contemporary vellum, slightly soiled, folio The references to Anna Lefroy: 'House = Basingstoke/Mrs Lefroy Tenant £80Pan; '1837 July 22 to cash of Mrs Lefroy for use of Fixtures [£]30'; '1837 Deer to... Mrs Lefroy/1/2 Years Rent [£]40'. Anna Lefroy was Jane Anna Elizabeth Austen, the niece of the novelist Jane Austen and daughter of her eldest brother Reverend James Austen. Anna married Benjamin Lefroy, vicar of Ashe, Hampshire, 1783-1872. When Anna was 2 her mother suddenly died and 'Anna was taken from Deane to Steventon to be cared for by her grandmother and aunts... Anna became a dearly loved part of the Steventon family, and the nearest thing to a child of their own for Cassandra and Jane. Jane's acute observation of children must have sprung first from this little niece; when the small Gardiners in Pride and Prejudice express joy in purely physical fashion, "over their whole bodies, in a variety of capers and frisks", we are surely seeing Anna in a happy moment' (Claire Tomalin, Jane Austen: A Life, 1997). In later years Anna was the chief source of information about Jane Austen's personal life. (1)

1951 AJS Model 20 Spring Twin, 500cc. Registration Number: MAL 551 (non-transferable). Frame Number: 62806. Engine Number: 51/20/5297. Gearbox: G111L50. The AJS Model 20 and corresponding Matchless G9 were launched at the post war Earls Court Motorcycle Show in late 1948. Initially for export to the us, it was not until the late summer of 1949 the the first examples reached the home market. The styling was modern and the dual seat, megaphone silencers and bright chrome finish justified the name of Spring Twin. The rest of the cycle parts were standard AMC, with the engine being housed in a pivoted fork frame with telescopic front forks. The basic design changed little over the course of the next few years, the most significant change being made in 1952 when a new Burman gearbox was adopted. In 1951, the rear suspension was upgraded to the Jampot unit, derided for its shape in the 28th of September issue of Motor Cycle Magazine. In the same year minor changes included a new Lucas horn-push on the handlebar and a medallion badge in place of the previously used transfer. Front fork shuttle dampening was also replaced with rod and damper-type. Progressively developed, the Model 20's twin-cylinder engine underwent a number of capacity increases, finally being discounted when the 646cc AJS Model 31 replaced it in the Autumn of 1958. This matching numbers example, made in the first year of the Jampot suspension, was purchased by our vendor some fifteen years or so ago as a restoration project for his retirement. Little is known of its early history but in the 1960's it was owned by a R.W Gosling of Scunthorpe, then in 1962 a Geoffrey Pearson of Scunthorpe and in 1971 a Michael Rough of Gainsborough in Lincolnshire. Restored a few years ago the the same high standards as the 1960 BSA Gold Star sold by these rooms in our July 2017 auction it is in very good condition; it has now covered only 42 miles and further running in is advised. other projects mean this is now surplus to requirements. Sold with the R.F.60 continuation book, V5 and V5C .

Michael Whiteway, V & A Publications, London, 2004, plate 194, page 15 Note: This rare teapot is one of a group of remarkable designs that the pioneering Victorian designer Christopher Dresser produced for James Dixon & Sons of Sheffield from 1879 -1883. Christopher Dresser was born in Glasgow in 1834, the son of a tax collector and in his career he became Britain's first professional, independent, industrial designer. Unlike William Morris, his direct contemporary, Dresser fully embraced new production techniques in colour, pattern, material and ornamentation and worked with innumerable manufacturers to produce objects which were well designed and available to many. According to Dresser an object which perfectly fulfilled its function was beautiful in itself and needed no ornament and nowhere is this more apparent than in his metalwork. His early designs were informed by his study of botany however his work was transformed by his trip to Japan in 1876 as the official representative of the Victoria and Albert Museum, giving it a remarkably contemporary appearance. A series of costings books, held in the archives at Sheffield, reveal that Dresser produced approximately 80 designs for James Dixon & Sons, not all of which are thought to have gone into production. This was possibly due to comparative expense of manufacture, but also because of the radical nature of his designs. Dresser's interest in and close understanding of the process of manufacture and the use of materials are reflected in these books. They show how much each item produced cost to make in detail, how they were made and, in most cases, which were designed by Dresser, as in this case. The illustration shows the entry in the costings book for this teapot and, as well as laying out costs, also shows who would carry out some of the work. The cost, at £1/3s/10d, makes it an expensive item, however unusually the current example is made in silver rather than plate making it a special request and even more expensive to produce. Hallmarked in Sheffield in 1882, this teapot design first appears in the 1879 costings book. Several other versions of this teapot were made including a version especially created for Tiffany & Co. with hammered decoration. Looking through the books, the majority of the designs are not illustrated, with the exception of those by Dresser, which usually appear as a thumbnail sketch or photograph. This may be an indication that these more expensive and unusual vessels did not appear in their trade catalogues and were perhaps made to order. This particular example bears an interesting engraving which describes the occasion of its presentation in 1887, five years after its manufacture. The inscription reveals the teapot's likely original owner was the 6th Duke of Portland, William Cavendish-Bentinck. Amongst his long list of prestigious accolades, the Duke held a passion for thoroughbred horse racing and many of the horses he owned won championship races, including the Ascot Gold Cup and his half-sister was the English aristocrat and society hostess Lady Ottoline Morrell. Frank and Kathryn Hodgkinson resided near the Duke of Portland's estate in Nottinghamshire and were awarded the teapot by the Duke for best yearling filly. Kathryn was, in particular, known for her generosity to the staff she employed. Among them was George Maskery, a coachman to the Hodgkinsons who bred the horse mentioned in the engraving. After marrying Kathryn's maid, the Maskerys were gifted many items by Kathryn for their dedicated service, including this teapot by Christopher Dresser.
