Lot 64

Tennis profile film on Billie Jean King – presented by Oxford Films - Sports Action Profile – titled Billie Jean King -full colour with sound produced in 1972 and runs for 21 mins. 35 secs. This fascinating film begins with action of King playing in a covered court tournament and quickly refers back to slow-motion action of Suzanne Lenglen, May Sutton, Helen Jacobs, Pauline Betz and Gussy Moran. Billie Jean discusses her early tennis years. The commentator discusses her national and Wimbledon titles. In this film she is 28 years-old and is already called "the Old Lady". Billie Jean and Larry King talk to her agent in Florida. There follows some entertaining action between King and 17 year-old Chris Evert in the final of the international open at Fort Lauderdale, in which Evert was triumphant 6-1 6-0. There is much soul searching from Billie Jean as she faces her demons and successes throughout the film, and offers us a fascinating insight into her inner most thoughts. "I never lost to anyone that badly, in my life .ever!" We see her at the national sporting goods show in Chicago signing autographs. "We are not just names that people read about in the papers, we have personalities." This film is packed full of interviews with King and so relates her opinions on all kinds of subjects. Evert and King were to meet again inside one month and the film follows king`s preparation for the match and their meeting in the final - at which King gained revenge. "I don`t think most people realise how `blood and guts` it really is.Sometimes you think you lungs are going to burst" – c/w copy on CD.
