SHAW GEORGE BERNARD: (1856-1950) Irish playwright, Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1925. A fine A.L.S., G. Bernard Shaw, to the recto of his personal printed postcard, Ayot St. Lawrence, Welwyn, Hertforshire, 23rd December 1922, to John Palmer of the League of Nations in Geneva. Shaw writes, in full, ´Pirate! Well, send the £5-5-0 to Nansen, whom I knew before you were born. I owe him a letter for months; and his fund may as well have the fee by way of apology. You should always obtain your authorisation first, as the performance may be a breach of standing contracts for exclusive rights. I have just received an extremely abusive postcard from Zurich from an outraged Swiss who regards Bluntschli as an insulting caricature of a noble race. I thought you were dead, and rejoice to find that you are only buried´. Hand addressed by Shaw to the verso. A letter of typically Shavian content and with an interesting association. VGJohn Palmer (1885-1944) English theatre critic and author whose works include Bernard Shaw: An Epitaph and Bernard Shaw: Harlequin or Patriot? (both 1915). Palmer lived in Geneva from 1920-38 working in the Secretariat of the League of Nations.Frtdtjof Nansen (1861-1930) Norwegian explorer and polymath, Nobel Peace Prize winner in 1922.Captain Bluntschli, a Swiss mercenary, is a character in Shaw´s comedy Arms and the Man, first produced in April 1894 and published in 1898.

The print was a reaction to several speeches in 1797/98 by the Irish-born Lord Moira, criticizing the treatment of the Irish by the Anglo-Irish government. His point was that arbitrary and repressive measures carried out in Ireland in the name of preserving order were in fact the worst way of ensuring the much-needed support of the Irish against threats from France. Indeed, he argued, such harsh measures would eventually lead to further discontent and indeed open rebellion. His arguments proved to be very prescient

A rare Rowlandson caricature from the suite of 18 Masqueronians. Published in six sets of three they represented 'English types'. The subjects are displayed emblematically with the wares or tools of their trade worn as garlands. This trio represents a philosopher, a prostitute and an epicure.

Members of the Marlborough Club, [1872 - 73], an album of 20 chromolithographic caricatures, each tipped onto contemporary thick paper (as published), each with a pencil or ink annotation identifying the sitter, each caricature approximately 375 x 275, overall sheet size 520 x 355 mm, marbled endpapers, title printed in gilt to the upper siding, contemporary half morocco gilt, spine frayed with slight loss, upper board detached, bumped and a little worn at extremities, folioQTY: (1)NOTE:Rare. In 1871 the Marlborough Club, recently established by the Prince of Wales and his set, commissioned Carlo Pellegrini to produce caricatures of its 400 members. He produced only twenty portraits before giving up the project in 1873. Pellegrini is best known as one of the chief contributors of caricatures to Vanity Fair between 1869 and 1888 under his pseudonym ‘Ape’ or ‘Singe’.

Stapled to the note is a copy of 'Jeremy Beadle's Today's The Day..11th December' taken from the Daily Express of 11/12/78 which has a caricature of Eric holding a tankard of beer with Ernie Wise looking on, and stating Eric Morecambe married Joan on that day in 1952.
