From an important private London collection; formed in the 1970s and 1980s. See Bishop, M.C. and Coulston, C.N. Roman Military Equipment, London, 1993. This type of buckle is known as a Crested Closed Loop Dolphin due to the design of two facing, or sometimes, as in this example, opposing dolphins that form the loop. The type became popular in the late third century AD as a military fitting and continued into the Byzantine period. On this example the dolphins have become highly stylised with only the crests visible. The square belt plate with faceted flower motif can be compared with examples from the Danubian cultures of Migration Period peoples. 395 grams total, plate: 54mm (2 1/4"). Fine condition, tongue separate.

Property of a gentleman; acquired in the late 1960s-early 1970s. Cf. Menghin, W. The Merovingian Period. Europe Without Borders, Berlin, 2007 (Kerch, Ukraine, p.306"). Buckles such as these are often described as being Gothic, an east Germanic people who settled in the Roman provinces as the political stability of these areas collapsed. Their art styles are typical of the Migration period in that they are composed of stylised animals and swirls and often employing garnets; there is also a hint of Roman and Byzantine styles. The display of wealth was carried out by by both men and women and was a means of defining themselves on the basis of their common lineage as part of distinct families. As well as distinguishing themselves through formal Germanic dress, it is also likely that ruling families sought to identify themselves with the high culture of the Byzantium. 66 grams, 11cm (4 1/4"). Very fine condition; one cabochon absent.

Europe Without Borders, Berlin, 2007, item I.38.5. Buckles with round or kidney-shaped plates evolved from Hunnic period cloisonne buckles. They are particularly common in high status Frankish graves in north western France during the period of Clovis I, king of the unified Frankish tribes. Such buckles not only held belts around the waist together, but also various arts of equipment, such as sword straps, that were an integral part of the warrior elite. 51 grams, 67mm (2 3/4").
