A RARE SULPHIDE PORTRAIT BUST OF GEORGE WASHINGTON BY DESPREZ FRENCH, EARLY 19TH CENTURY The polished glass medallion with bust of Washington facing to his right, the back of the bust marked "DESPREZ", the whole of circular sunburst form with pointed edge and ribbed back, floral gilt bronze suspension mount and loop, in later glazed case the sulphide 10.5cm diameter, the case 24 x 21cm Provenance: By family descent from the Crane and Van Duzer families in New York. Barthélemy Desprez (fl.1773-1819) was a chemist and the chief modeler at the Manufacture nationale de Sèvres until approximately 1792. He pioneered the creation and invention of sulphide portraits in France- a process which was continued with his son Desprez Jnr. and brought to England by Apsley Pellatt (1791-1863). From the likely dating of this example it is very difficult to determine which may have been responsible for the creation of it. It is possible that this portrait is derived in part from a print after Jean-Antoine Houdon's marble bust of Washington executed 1785-1792. One such likely source is Joseph Wood's portrait after Houdon engraved by William Satchwell Leney and published by Joseph Delaplaine in Philadelphia in 1814, an example of which is held in the Royal Collection (RCIN 618879). It would seem that this sulphide was originally created possibly as one of a pendant pair of similar sunburst form- the other modelled as Benjamin Franklin looking to his left. An example of the Franklin portrait is held in the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery (1927X https://npg.si.edu/object/npg_1927X) but misattributed to the French sculptor Louis Desprez (1799-1870). At the time of cataloguing no comparable sulphide depiction of Washington has been found- an example of the pendant Franklin sulphide was sold as part of lot 699- Brunk Auctions, Asheville, North Carolina, Important Private Collection from Boston, 12th November, 2022 ($3,000 excl. BP). Condition Report: With mild wear, marks, knocks and scratches as per age, handling, use, and cleaning. With inclusions and glass flaws from manufacture and various small chips around outer edges- gilt bronze suspension looks to be original, Currently stored in glazed box with retailers label for D B Butler & CO, Madison Ch ambers New York. Although the box is good for display- the brass pin mounts around it are not foam protected making removal and transport of the piece in/from the box liable to cause chips. A RARE WILLIAM & MARY WALNUT AND ARABESQUE MARQUETRY SIDE TABLE IN THE MANNER OF GERRIT JENSEN, CIRCA 1690 70cm high, 94cm wide, 61cm deepProvenance: Private Collection, LondonThe delicately rendered 'seaweed' or 'arabesque' marquetry (called 'filigree' in the early eighteenth century) is characterized by its two-dimensionality and dense foliate scrolls, and its panels are cut in a single operation. The intricate decoration of this fine side table was introduced during the reign of William and Mary (1689-1702). The density of its all-over highly stylised foliate and scrollwork ornamentation, of very fine quality denotes the piece as English and in particular associates it with Gerrit Jensen, Royal Cabinet maker (d.1715).A very closely related side table was sold Christie's 20th Nov 2011, Lot 441 ($43,750 incl. BP). Condition Report: Overall there are some scratches, marks, chips, knocks and abrasions. In restored condition and robust. It is not clear the extent of restoration though it is likely that the legs and feet could be later replacements possibly from the early 20th century, likewise it is likely that the flat stretcher has been repaired. Signs of other restoration. The brass handles, escutcheon, lock and key are later.Exceptional use of specimen timbers and the intricate detail of the seaweed marquetry of the top, stretcher and to all sides. Please see all the additional condition report photographs through the link on the condition report email as a visual reference of condition - they are a vital part of this report. A LARGE IMPRESSIVE BRONZE AND ORMOLU JARDINIÈRE ON A MARBLE PEDESTAL FRENCH, LATE 19TH CENTURY The shaped circular jardinière, stamped BT to several mounts, sides with oval bas-relief panels of playful amorini, spaced by four projecting flower filled cornucopia, terminating on lion paw feet, on a tall ormolu mounted green marble cylindrical pedestal mounted with flower garlands and a circlet of festooned flowers 184cm high, the jardinière 57cm high, the pedestal 125cm high, the base 38cm square For a similarly stamped jardinière/urn and marble pedestal, of comparable form proportions and style but mounted as a candelabra and retaining lid, please see Christie's New York, 500 Years Decorative Arts Europe: Property From a Private West Coast Collection, 18th October 2012, Lot 168 ($30,000 incl. It would seem probable that although the New York example is catalogued as having "associated" marble pedestal, comparison with this lot would rather suggest that the pedestal is integral to the piece and perhaps part of the decorative design of the atelier responsible.
Y A KINGWOOD, SATINWOOD, PARQUETRY DECORATED AND ORMOLU MOUNTED WRITING DESK EN ROGNON BY MILLET, LATE 19TH CENTURY Signed MILLET A PARIS 140cm high, 116cm wide, 70cm deep Provenance: Bonhams London, Fine European Furniture, Sculpture and Works of Art (20017), 5th July 2012, Lot 193 (£49,250 incl. BP) Property of a Gentleman, London Literature: Camille Mestdagh, L'ameublement d'art français (1850-1900), avec la collaboration de Pierre Lecoules, Les éditions de l'amateur, 2010 A very similar version of this bureau, by Millet, is illustrated in C. Mestdagh, p.212. The same sold Christie's New York, 24 October 2006, Lot 474, for $66,000. The present lot is an even more creative example than the version mentioned above as each candelabra is surmounted by a cherub and the legs to the front are headed by figural busts. The bronze mounts such as the side cherubs and the Mars infant surmounting the clock are reminiscent of the work by Leon Message and they could have been cast after his designs. Indeed, evidences have been found that he has not exclusively worked for Francois Linke but also for Krieger, Zwiener, Roux et Brunet and then possibly Millet. In that respect, this piece can be considered as one of the most interesting in maison Millet's production. As mentioned by Mestdagh, Theodore Millet exhibited a very similar bureau en rognon at the 1905 Paris Salon des industries du Mobilier.

Y A LOUIS XIV EBONY, BRASS AND TORTOISESHELL 'BOULLE' MARQUETRY BUREAU MAZARIN LATE 17TH CENTURY 80cm high, 120cm wide, 72cm deep The Bureau Mazarin, named after Cardinal Mazarin (1602-1661), signifies the furniture of 17th century and elite. The kneehole desk composition was preferential for the sword-bearing nobility; one could easily be seated sideways in front of the bureau with one knee under the work surface. Cardinal Mazarin was appointed as chief minister of France in 1641 by Anne of Austria, regent for Louis XIV, until his death in 1661. As minister of France, Mazarin was highly influential to the young king, undertaking the role of guiding Louis XIVs education and securing France's diplomatic prowess amongst the contemporary European powers. The intricate 'boulle' marquetry distinctive of a Bureau Mazarin, is attributed to the technique's namesake, Andre Charles Boulle, one of the most prominent cabinetmakers within Louis XIVs court, he helped to sophisticate the 'boulle' inlay technique. Sporting eight leg supports and distinctive x stretchers, the Bureau Mazarin is the precursor of the pedestal/partner's desk. An 1856 British Pioneer sawback sword and scabbard, made by Wilkinson, 1856, the blade marked to one side with "35" with crown above and "W" below, the broad arrow and large "X" (which shows it was officially sold out of service), the other marked with Wilkinson London, with "35" with crown above and "W" below and "8 '00", 57cm. long, the leather and brass scabbard marked "9.00 V.3.Bp.7". * The Royal Guernsey Militia were said to have been issued these swords. ** The British have had several patterns of sawback bayonets - however, this is the only sword. Carried by the Pioneers it was adopted in 1856 and was in use for quite a short period - into the early years of the 20th century. *** The purpose for the sword was twofold - it was obviously a weapon - but, with a strong blade the sawback functioned as an effective saw.
