[TOSCANINI ARTURO]: (1867-1957) Italian Conductor. Rare baton, being one of Toscanini´s batons during his NBC orchestra touring in 1950. An 11.5 baton (30cm), with wooden handgrip, attractively displayed beneath a 9.5 x 7 photograph, the image showing Toscanini standing, in a half-length pose and wearing his hat, alongside James Dolan. Framed in black, and glazed (plastic) to an overall of 12 x 15 (30cm x 38cm). Together with a 12mo clipped piece, bearing a seven bars of music with annotations in Toscanini´s hand. Also including an original unsigned 7 x 5 photograph of Toscanini showing him during rehearsals, two admittance cards to the late Toscanini´s services at the St. Patrick´s Cathedral in New York on 19th January 1957, and two original typed pages listing the honorary pallbearers. The list included among many others, Italian Ambassador Manlio Brosio, Mayor of New York Robert Wagner, Composer Samuel Barber, Director of the Metropolitan Opera Rudolf Bing, Tenor Giovanni Martinelli, Rudolf Serkin, etc… VG, 5  Provenance, the present baton comes from the estate of the late James B. Dolan (1915-2006) Librarian and Archivist of the NBC Orchestra under Toscanini 1942-54 and a friend of the Italian conductor. Dolan took care of all Toscanini´s scores and batons during and after his 1950 touring with the NBC Orchestra. Dolan would later be the Los Angeles Philharmonic´s librarian for 32 years.Dolan traveled with Toscanini on the symphony's 1950 cross-country tour. He was personally responsible for five large trunks of music for the 110 musicians who would perform 50 works during 21 concerts. On the special 12-car train, Dolan commanded an entire car for the music library. He was also the custodian of Toscanini's batons, which a Philadelphia dentist made by hand from the finest materials. Being in charge of them was no easy task, considering that the temperamental conductor could break several batons in anger during the course of a rehearsal. Dolan developed a hobby of making copies of scores with the conductor's notations, "all the editing and markings of his genius," Dolan wrote in a 1967 article. Other conductors have studied Dolan's copies to understand how the man considered the most brilliant conductor of his era shaped a particular piece of music.

Note:An initial wax version of this model of a dock worker was exhibited at the Salon De XX in Brussels in 1885, before a larger plaster was shown at the National Society of Fine Arts in Paris in 1889 to much acclaim: ‘never had one, with such intensity, put in a figure so tragic expression and touching, energy, suffering and resignation’. In 1890 the French State bought a version in bronze, which now resides at the Musée d'Orsay and a life-size copy resides in the main square in Antwerp, to the point of almost being a symbol of the city.

Boots a rare Bing clockwork teddy bear circa 1908, with cinnamon mohair, black boot button eyes, black stitched nose, mouth and claws, jointed elongated limbs, hump, keywind clockwork mechanism causing his head to go from side to side and a pair of leather shoes --16½in. (42cm.) high (replaced hand pads, repaired one side of feet pads, bald spot on back of head and around feet, other minor bald spots)

A small Bing Trippel-Trappel bulldog, of white felt with sprayed black patches, black boot button eyes, black stitched nose and mouth and pull-along walking mechanism --7in. (18cm.) long (hole in muzzle and left side, other small holes, one legs a little wobbly)

A rare early Bing white mohair teddy bear circa 1908, with black boot button eyes, pronounced muzzle, brown stitched nose, mouth and claws, swivel head, jointed elongated limbs with felt pads, card lined feet, hump and inoperative squeaker --13in. (33cm.) high (damage to pads and slight wear) - this bear is known as Maisey

A rare early Bing clockwork teddy bear circa 1908, with blonde mohair, black boot button eyes, pronounced clipped muzzle, black stitched nose, mouth and claws, clockwork mechanism causing the head to turn from left to right, jointed elongated limbs, replaced felt pads, card lined feet, hump and silvered button under arm --20in. (51cm.) high (a few bald spots and some thinning, mechanism needs adjusting, seems to be about to work, new key not a good fit)

A rare Bing tumbling teddy bear circa 1919, with brown mohair head, hands and feet, black boot button eyes, pronounced muzzle, black stitched nose and mouth, mechanism wound by arm causing the bear to tumble, original red felt jacket and brown cotton trousers, both with yellow rickrack trim, white felt waistcoat with brass buttons and unusual two red and black tinplate Bing Werke labels on right arm --9½in. (24cm.) (mohair bald and hole in waistcoat)

A rare large Bing teddy bear late 1920s, with golden mohair, clear and black glass eyes with brown backs, pronounced muzzle, swivel head, jointed elongated limbs with felt pads, hump, inoperative growler and rare pale blue and black Bing Werke label on right arm --23in. (58.5cm.) high (muzzle with two large holes either side, pads with some damage and slight general wear) - this rare button was the last form they used from 1927 until they ceased production in 1932

A rare early Bing all-in-one-ear teddy bear circa 1907, with blonde mohair, black boot button eyes, pronounced muzzle, black stitched nose, mouth and claws, back of head and back of ears all one piece of mohair, swivel head, jointed elongated limbs with felt pads, hump, inoperative squeaker and blue felt collar with 'I am behind the 8 ball' pin --13in. (33cm.) high (general wear and thinning, a few small bald spots, three pads repaired and black stitching probably redone)
