Nr. 064988). Eine weitere Version befindet sich im New Orleans Museum of Art (78,1 x 108,6 cm Invent. Nr. 61.88), welche allerdings als Werkstattarbeit gilt. Die Zuschreibungsgeschichte unseres Gemäldes hingegen kennt auch in der Vergangenheit Giandomenico selbst als Autor (E. Martini, 1991; G. Knox, 1999; G.M. Pilo, ohne Datum; U. Ruggeri, ohne Datum).Provenienz:Sammlung Imelda Marcos, Wittwe des ehemaligen Präsidenten der Philippinen.Christie‘s New York, 11. Januar 1991, Lot 69. (1320018) (13)Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo,1727 Venice – 1804 ibid., attributedTHE MINUET- VENETIAN CARNIVAL SCENEOil on canvas. Relined.79.5 x 108.5 cm.Verso on the stretcher with a label. The depiction is inspired by plays of Carlo Goldoni and shows the main characters of the Commedia dell´Arte, Pantalone and Columbina, along with other elegantly dressed, masked figures, gathered in the garden of a villa to dance. It is a genre scene set in the atmosphere of carnival; the event that made a visit to the city of Venice complete for 18th century European travellers. Tiepolo uses the carnival as a pretext to describe the customs and mood of those around him: a society that hides its decadence, hides behind fleeting appearances, amusements, and pastimes. When Tiepolo created this painting, the minuet, a very distinctive couple dance, had been popular throughout Europe for some time. The scene shown by Tiepolo is Venetian, while numerous minuets, for example by Luigi Boccherini, were also created abroad, for example in Madrid. This excellent work refers directly to another work with similar dimensions (81 x 105 cm) held at the Louvre in Paris with inv. no. RF1938-39. The painting there was held in the collection of Francesco Algarotti in 1765 and from 1876 in the collection of Princess Mathilde Bonaparte. Another version is held at the Metropolitan Museum in New York (75.6 x 120 cm, inv. no. 1980767) and another at the Museu Nacional d´Art de Catalunya in Barcelona (78.5 x 110 cm, inv. no. 064988). A further version is held at the New Orleans Museum of Art (78.1 x 108.6, inv. no. 61.88), which is also considered a workshop work. The attribution history of the present painting has often considered it to be by Giandomenico himself. (E. Martini, 1991; G Knox, 1999 G.M Pilo, undated; U. Ruggeri, undated).Provenance:Collection Imelda Marcos, widow of the former president of the Phillipines.Christie’s New York, 11 January 1991, lot 69.

Joan Miro (Spanish (Catalan), 1893-1983). Aquatint etching on paper from the "El Pi de Formentor (The Pine of Formentor)" Suite, 1976. Depicting an abstracted composition of bold black shapes surrounding a burst of bright, primary colors in the artist's signature style. Pencil signed along the lower right; numbered 34/50 along the lower left. Published by Sala Gaspar, Barcelona. "The Pine of Formentor" is a well-known Catalan poem by Miquel Costa i Llobera.Provenance: Private Connecticut Collection, 1991; Private Minnesota Collection.Lot Essay:Joan Miro's early works were influenced by Catalan folk art and Fauvism, but it was his encounter with Surrealism in Paris during the 1920s that profoundly shaped his artistic vision. Embracing the Surrealist ethos of unlocking the subconscious mind, Miro developed a unique visual language characterized by biomorphic forms, dreamlike symbols, and vibrant colors. His paintings, such as "The Farm" (1921-1922) and "The Tilled Field" (1923-1924), evoke a sense of poetic spontaneity and primal energy.Throughout his career, Miro continued to innovate, exploring various mediums including painting, sculpture, ceramics, and printmaking. His experimentation with automatic drawing and spontaneous mark-making liberated his artistic process, allowing for a fluid and intuitive approach to creation. Miro's iconic works, such as "The Harlequin's Carnival" (1924-1925) and "The Birth of the World" (1925), exemplify his playful yet profound exploration of form and color. In addition to his artistic achievements, Miro was a committed advocate for social and political causes, particularly during the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War and World War II. His art often served as a vehicle for political commentary, expressing solidarity with the oppressed and advocating for peace and freedom. Miro's enduring legacy as a pioneer of Surrealism and a champion of artistic experimentation continues to inspire generations of artists, as his boundless imagination and creative spirit remain as relevant today as ever before. Through his daring exploration of the subconscious and his fearless embrace of spontaneity, Miro transcended artistic conventions, leaving an indelible mark on the trajectory of modern art.Sight; height: 41 1/4 in x width: 35 1/2 in. Framed: height: 56 1/2 in x width: 50 1/2 in.
