A Newcastle upon Tyne banknote for £1, issued by Surtees, Burdon & Brandling, 1st July, 1802, signed by John Surtees as Director and John Emerson as cashier; endorsed verso by Thomas Davidson and stamped "Exhibited under a commission of bankruptcy..."; presented between two sheets of glass. NB: Surtees, Burdon & Brandling Bank collapsed in 1803 with considerable impact on local businesses. Brandling's wealth was enough for him to survive, but Burdon (who had previously invested £30,000 in the Iron Bridge, Sunderland) went under, and retired from public life. The Partner's were liable for more than a quarter-of-a-million pounds by 1811, and the matter was not resolved until 1832. See illustration
