Christofle is a French manufacturer of fine silver flatware and home accessories. They are renowned for their sterling, silverplate and stainless flatware. The origins of Christofle date to 1830. This overall design is reminiscent of 18th century Chinese table screens. It illustrates the significant Far Eastern influence on European decorative arts following the reopening of Japan to the West in 1854, and the restoration of Emperor Meiji in 1868. Subsequently, widespread interest in all things Asian was stimulated by Japanese displays at the International Exhibitions in London, 1862, in Paris, 1867, and in Philadelphia, 1876. In 1869, an Exhibition was held by the Union des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, where an entire museum of Oriental art was displayed. The Western hunger for this new taste is evident in a range of products, such as this lot, where romantic motifs and naturalism were combined with a mélange of styles to create an atmosphere, instead of simply attempting to produce accurate reproductions of Oriental articles. Designers and makers responded to the challenge of these new influences by studying forms and techniques of Asian decoration, and produced cloisonné enamel, marquetry of shell and ivory, patinated bronzes, and carved woods, all using the stylised vocabulary of the Far East. Makers such a Viardot, Lièvre, Giroux, L'Escalier de Cristal, Duvinage and Christofle, all conjured up images of the Orient in pieces of the utmost refinement and quality. Photographs of Christofle's stands at the 1878 and 1889 Paris exhibitions include items enamelled in the Japanese taste, a testament to the enduring market for Asian-inspired objects throughout the century (see H. Bouilhet, Christofle, Silversmith since 1830, Paris, 1981). Emile-Auguste Reiber imitated Japanese production techniques to satisfy the vogue for exotic styles. His much lauded designs were used by many of the leading artisans of the time, including Theodore Deck, and the ébéniste Jean-Michel Grohé who created two cabinets for La Païva. Interestingly, the bronzes and enamels for these cabinets were executed by Christofle, where Reiber was employed as chief designer. At the 1873 exhibition in Vienna, which was billed as a ''meeting of East and West'', Christofle exhibited a Chinese style enamelled vase designed by Reiber that received high accolades. In 1877 in Paris, he published Le premier volume des Albums-Reiber, a volume of 40 design prints concentrating on Japanese objects by Cernuschi, Bing, and Maron in Yokohama. Vgl.: M. Bascou; M.-M. Massé; P. Thiébaut (Hrsg.): Musée d'Orsay. Catalogue sommaire illustré des arts décoratifs, 1988, OAO 1017. Vgl.: E. Bergerat: Les Chefs-d'oeuvre d'Art à l'Exposition universelle 1878, 1878, S. 35. Roerich, Agni Publishing, Gallery of Art Academy, Art Center Kunstberatung. Samara-Moscow-Zurich, 2011. Vol 2, pg. 458 (illustrated)LOT NOTESWhen Nicholas Roerich published a monograph of 62 of his works in 1924, he chose to include two landscapes from his stay in Karelia (1917-1919). One of the two is the present work, painted in 1917, a landscape of Lake Hympola (Hymppelä in Finnish). His choice suggests that Roerich held this painting in particularly high regard and it remains one of the best representations of what was a prolific period in his artistic career. The calm waters and vibrant blues of this work betray none of the turmoil that surrounded Roerich's personal life during this time. He was suffering from chronic pneumonia and had just fled from Russia to escape the violence and chaos of the Revolution. He settled in the Lake Ladoga area, living on the Yhinlahti estate with his family, and painted almost 100 works in 1917 alone. That year was marked by struggle. Letters to friends reveal a lingering sense of detachment and depression, and more than one of his Karelia landscapes lack the life that he was so desperately seeking. This painting was a breakthrough, proof that Roerich could retaliate against adversity by immersing himself in waters and rock formations that had stood the test of time. He grounds himself on a ledge, inviting the viewer to sit with him and gaze across the lake, past the distant mountain range and cloud formations. The vast distance between the brown rock in the foreground and the deep blue horizon is not unlike Roerich's own journey from sickness and strife to hope and a renewed sense of purpose. In the middle, the rocks display an intense battle between the elements, full of conflicting twists and turns. But, despite the cool Northern light, tiny flecks of deep golden yellow peak out from the icy blues, signs of warmth in a desolate landscape.Roerich exhibited most of the works painted in 1917-1918 in his personal exhibitions in Stockholm (November, 1918), as well as Copenhagen and Helsinki (1919) and later London (1920. The present work was almost certainly among them, even though we are unable to identify it in the exhibition catalogs as the titles of the Karelia landscapes kept changing at the time.We would like to thank Gvido Trepša, Senior Researcher at Nicholas Roerich Museum, New York, for providing catalogue information.CONDITIONObserved out of frame, the painting appears in age-appropriate condition. ALEXANDER SAMOKHVALOV (RUSSIAN 1894-1971)Portrait of Sergei Aleksandrovich Rinkevich, oil on canvas87.5 x 100 cm (34 1/2 x 39 3/4 in.)PROVENANCECollection of Sergei RinkevichThence by descent in the family LOT NOTESSold along a signed and notarized letter of provenance from the grandson of Sergei Rinkevich (copy available upon request)When Samokhvalov produced this work in the early 1950s, he was renowned for monumental Socialist Realist history paintings, as well as intimate portraits in interior settings, including the present and Girl in an Interior (sold for $131,000, including buyer's premium, at Shapiro Auctions, December 10, 2016, lot 7). The sitter, Professor Sergei Rinkevich, was an eminent electrical engineer and professor, best known as the purveyor of the electrical drive in the USSR. Dr. Rinkevich marshalled the founding of the world's first university department dedicated to the improvement of the drive, which, under his directorship in the 1920s and 30s, launched the rapid electrification of the Soviet heavy industry and navy.According to the letter provided by the sitter's grandson, Igor Sergeevich Rinkevich, who witnessed the making of the work, Samokhvalov painted the image over several sessions in the family's Leningrad apartment in the early 1950s. (See ref. 1 for a photograph of Igor Rinkevich together with the work). Capturing the likeness of one of the nation's distinguished scientists, Samokhvalov shows Dr. Rinkevich deep in thought, his fingers bookmarking a red volume -- a pose reminiscent of Renaissance and Baroque portraits of scholars, such as Bronzino's Portrait of a Young Man with a Book in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum. With characteristic economy of brushwork, Samokhvalov pictures his subject attentively and at a considerable scale, demonstrating his hand as a leading Soviet portraitist.Alexander Samokhvalov, one of the foremost representatives of the Leningrad school of painting, began his artistic career in 1914 at the Higher Art School at the Imperial Academy of Arts, where he studied under Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin. Unlike many of his peers at the academy and the Mir iskusstva circle, such as Eugene Lanceray, Anna Ostroumova-Lebedeva, or Alexander Osmerkin, in the late 1920s Samokhvalov enthusiastically embraced the development of Socialist Realism for which he is remembered. As in his most recognizable work — Girl in a Football Shirt, awarded the gold medal at the International Art Fair in Paris (which also exhibited Pablo Picasso's Guernica) — his paintings from the 1930s often showcase the first generation of Soviet women as the face of modernity and strength.CONDITIONUnframed, the painting is in age-appropriate condition. Very fine craquelure visible upon close inspection. Flaking resulting from craquelure visible to the left upper edge. Rubbing resulting in scattered losses to the corners and perimeter. Inspection under UV light shows no signs of restoration.Kindly note, the auction is comprised of two sessions:Session I: Russian and Asian Art, Antiques and Jewelry, lots 1-331Session II: European, North and South American, and Ethnographic Art, Antiques, Jewelry, and Design, lots 500-827N.B.
