An interesting WWII US Army prototype khaki jacket, known as the Eisenhower jacket, a 2 pocket BD type, with red, white and blue Army Service Forces roundel to right shoulder, made for the vendor’s father (later Lt Col) who “happened to be of roughly average size and height...After the jacket was completed, photographed and approved he was allowed to keep it....” (typed details included), together with overcoat, roundel to shoulder, 2 pairs of overalls, 2 shirts, and 2 photographs (one official) of the vendor’s father wearing the jacket. CAPPER JOHN: (1861-1955) British Major General of World War I, instrumental in the development of the tank. Capper also pioneered the development of airships in Britain and was involved in large scale military planning in 1918-19. A.L.S., J E Capper, four pages, 8vo, Alresford, Hampshire, 10th February 1920, to Cunningham. Capper thanks his correspondent for a box of beautiful peaches and continues to add that he hopes they will not lose touch with each other again, remarking 'I think you hardly realise how much I missed you from the division & cursed that sniper who got you when you were in command of the 13th Middlesex' and further sending news of his family 'We are recovering from all the stress & worries of marrying our only daughter - our son was killed on the Somme - who was married….to Capt. K. G. Previti (?) (late Royal Marines, & now shortly to become a partner in the Trinidad Asphalt Co. which seems to be a very satisfactory business) who seems a thoroughly good sort. We expect them back from a short honeymoon in Madeira next week & they will settle down…..about 50 miles of us, which in these days of motor cars is neighbourly' and also commenting on the weather in England. Together with Herbert Shoubridge (1871-1923) British Major General of World War I, later Commandant of the Royal Military College at Sandhurst, 1923. Vintage signed 5 x 10 photograph of Shoubridge standing outdoors in a full length pose wearing his military cap and a large overcoat and boots. Signed ('H Shoubridge, Major General') in dark fountain pen ink at the base of the image. Also including Wilson Carlile (1847-1942) English Evangelist, founder of the Church Army in 1882. The Church Army was very active amongst troops in France during World War I, running around 2000 social clubs across the country. English percussion overcoat pistol by Parker Field and son, single .50 calibre damascus engraved barrel, walnut chequered stock, reserve to shoulder of stock bearing engraved number 5, heraldic reserve to left side, possibly made for a private army, later ram-rod.* Condition: Woodwork in sound condition with no splits and only minor indentations, more evident at the barrel retaining cross bolt to LHS. 3 ¾” octagonal browned Damascus barrel with Crown over GP and V proof marks to LHS with rust staining to top three flats, action and top tang. Remnants of undecipherable possible gold inlaid motif to top of action flat. Blued trigger guard with scroll engraving with very minor loss of bluing but rusting to inside of guard, ramrod not original and loose in retaining slot, inventory number 8984 to front bottom of wooden grip. White metal stylised shield (possibly silver and denoting London) with sword emblem in top LH quadrant, another white metal plaque inlet into top of stock with ‘5’ behind tang. Possible well executed wood repair to RHS of stock below cross bolt!!?? Action crisp in operation.
A M-GENERALS FULL DRESS UNIFORM etc. A Gt War period full dress uniform with Generals rank full dress coat, trousers, epaulettes, boots. Scarlet and gold bullion sash, full dress tunic with bullion elbow - cuff ornate decoration, Victorian RAMC sidecap with gilt/silver cm badge. A Generals grey cloth overcoat, with GV buttons. All contained in a tin trunk. The items in this lot were worn by Major General Louis Edward Anderson CB, later D D M S Southern Command India. Born 27/3/1861 at Roden Place Dundalk, educated at Dundalk School and Qualified at the College of Surgeons Dublin in 1881. Too young for the army he sailed as a Ships Doctor, for six voyages. 1881-84. He served in the Soudan Expedition December 1884 (Medal with two clasps-Khedives Star) . Thence to India and served in the Tochi Valley (Medal & clasp). Served in the South African War (QSA with two clasps including Defence of Mafeking). KSA with two clasps MID LG 8/2/1901. Surgeon General 1912-Major General in 1919. War Medal 1914-18 for service in Ireland until 1916, thence India. CB 1913. Full copied details available.
18th/19th Century English School Half length portrait of Colonel Edward Alured Draper, wearing a yellow waistcoat with brown overcoat, watercolour, 13cm x 8cm Edward Alured Draper (1776-1841) was a Military Officer in The British Army and Civil Servant in Mauritius. Educated at Eton, he served in The West Indies and Egypt. He served many roles in Mauritius, including Chief of Police, Colonial Secretary, Collector of Customs, Register of Slaves, Magistrate and Colonial Treasurer.
