1914 Triumph Model C 4hp Registration Number: SL9988 Frame Number: TBA   - Older restoration by Triumph specialist James Tennant-Ellis. The Triumph single cylinder engine was designed by Charles Hathaway, winning the Isle of Man TT races in 1908, which gave an enormous boost to sales of Triumph machines. By 1914, the engine size had grown to 85 x 97 giving 550cc and developing 4hp. Other features were the curved frame, giving a very low saddle position, semi-automatic drip feed lubrication and a wider fuel tank. No less than seven models were catalogued, 3 roadsters, 3 TT roadsters and a TT racer. Impressive long distance records underlined the reliability of the Triumphs, Harry Long rode a 1911 Triumph for 40,037 mile in 44 weeks, Ivan Hart-Davis set an end to end record of 886 miles in 29 hours, and Albert Catt rode his 1911 Free Engine model for 6 consecutive days, to reach a distance of 2557 miles in May 1911, to name just a few remarkable feats. All this together with TT wins, made Triumph a world beater. This excellent 1914 Model C was restored in the 1990s by Triumph specialist James Tennant-Ellis, taking care to use original parts. The Sturmey Archer 3 speed gearbox, has recently been overhauled at a cost of over £2,000.  Part of a collection, the vendor regularly uses the bike on VMCC runs. Serviced and running well, the Triumph is complete with V5c and history file.

A very large Royal Worcester vase and cover by Harry Davis, dated 1899The elaborate modelling in the neo-Renaissance manner including masks, swags and grotesques, the front panel painted with a landscape view, perhaps Matlock High Tor, signed H Davis, reserved on a deep blue ground with raised paste gilding as a floral frame, 49.5cm high, factory mark in grey with date code for 1899, shape number 1398 (2)Footnotes:Harry Davis would have been aged just fourteen or fifteen when he painted this vase in 1899. At this time Harry was still serving his apprenticeship under the supervision of Edward Salter. That the young Harry was permitted to sign this vase shows the great respect that the Royal Worcester factory felt for their young painter's abilities. Davis. A.S.C.); British War and Victory Medals (2.Lieut. L. E. Davis) very fine Three: Lieutenant T. H. Webb, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, who was twice wounded on the Western Front 1914-15 Star (1955 Pte. T. H. Webb. Oxf. & Bucks. L.I.); British War and Victory Medals (2. Lieut. T. H. Webb) traces of verdigris, otherwise very fine Pair: Lieutenant R. A. W. Kennedy, Highland Light Infantry, attached 7th Battalion Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry British War and Victory Medals (Lieut. R. A. W. Kennedy) mounted as worn, very fine (8) £120-£160 --- Leonard Edgar Davis was born in Addlestone, Surrey on 13 June 1895. He attested for the Army Service Corps on 7 November 1913, and was promoted Sergeant on 4 August 1914. He served during the Great War on the Western Front from 21 December 1914 and was commissioned into the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry on 26 April 1917. Returning to France in June 1917, he joined the 5th Battalion at Arras and was wounded by a gun shot to his leg at Glencourse Wood, Ypres, on 24 August 1917. A Medical Board report dated 11 July 1919 states that the injury sustained a fracture to his right femur and knee, which resulted in a 2.5” shortening of his right leg. Thomas Harry Webb, a student at Culham College, Abingdon, Oxfordshire, attested for the 4th Battalion Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry on 23 September 1913. He served during the Great War on the Western Front from 29 March 1915 and was wounded on the Somme on 19 July 1916, with multiple gun shot wounds to his right forearm. Commissioned on 26 April 1917, he returned to his battalion in July 1917 and was further wounded by a shell splinter to his cheek on 28 August 1917. He was promoted to Lieutenant on 26 October 1918. Ronald Alexander Whitelaw Kennedy was born in Glasgow in 1893. He was commissioned into the 2/5th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry for service during the Great War, and served in Salonika from May 1917, attached to the 7th Battalion Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. He died in York on 20 February 1966.

Cricket: A leather bound Visitors Book in which John Arlott asked people who visited his home to sign their name and address. It dates from 1946 onwards. The entries cover 28 pages and include local friends, BBC colleagues, famous English and touring cricketers, and names from the world of poetry and literature.In 1946 we have the top players of the Indian touring team - Vijay Merchant, Vijay Hazare and Vinoo Mankad plus Michael Ayrton - a famous artist, sculptor, writer and broadcaster. Then in 1947 we meet members of the South African touring team - J D Lindsay -and Louis Duffus (writer) - as well as Req Perks, the Worcestershire cricketer who became a close friend. Harry Craig an Irish writer who was producing radio programmes at the time but later became a noted screenwriter of top level movies - writes a little four line ditty beginning "In Arlott's home they filled my glass. In 1949 several of the NZ tourists, including the manager and captain, as well as several of the Leicestershire cricket team. Also some famous players - Bill Bowes. Denis Compton, Bill Edrich,Norman Yardley. In 1950 we start with Raymond Postgate - a famous left-wing socialist and novelist (one of his books listed below) - but soon get back into cricketers - Martin Young, Wilf Wooller, Desmond Eagar. Also writers like Rupert Hart-Davis and Rex Warner and a fairly famous bandleader and impresario - Jack Hylton. Diana Rait Kerr arrives from Lord's and then nine members of the West Indian touring team including Gerry Gomez and Goddard the captain. They are followed by Harry Altham, Neville Cardus (the first visit from a key friend and colleague) and several other cricketers. From the entertainment world we see the comedian Ted Ray and many artistic and literary figures - Laurence Whistler. Pennethorne Hughes, William Plomer, the cartoonist 'Giles' - and then the first signature by John Betieman, the famous and much-loved poet laureate. He signs in on another 4 occasions over the next few years. In 1951 we get South African tourists - the Rowan brothers, Isaacs and Charles Fortune. Then, moving on to 1953 the great Lindwall and Miller arrive as do Mr and Mrs Denis Compton, Walter Robins, Benaud, WA Johnston and a first visit from Gerald Brodribb. Also Andrew Young, well regarded Scottish poet whose works were revered by Arlott. (see items below) And Norman Birkett, the cricket loving barrister.More cricket figures appear - Bill Bowes and Neville Cardus again, several Somerset players, Leslie Gutteridge, AA Thomson, Tom Graveney, Arthur Morris. Also a noted cricket-loving literary name - Edmund Blunden. Another interesting character was Ted Mason who was the first BBC screenwriter of The Archers and Dick Barton - Special Agent. The names tumble over and over - Frank Tyson, Robin Marlar, Rex Alston, Leo Harrison (Arlott's greatest cricket player friend). Ray Robinson, Willie Watson, Jackie McGlew, Neil Adcock and further visits by Whistler, Betjeman etc. By 1956 Colin Cowdrey, lan Craig, Peter May, RS Whitington, JW Rutherford, Jim Burke, Ron Archer, Len Hutton, David Sheppard, Gamini Goonesena and other cricketers show up plus many returns by Frank Tyson. Arlott's fellow BBC icon Brian Johnston visits with his wife, Pauline. Also one of the Boulting brothers, a famous movie maker. Finally, the great writer Kingley Amis appears twice but then the list is finished. John must have moved on to a new Visitors Book which sadly is not included in this lot. Still, a fine collection - and an important indicator of just how Arlott launched himself from local policeman to world famous broadcaster, writer and TV personality.Please assess photographs for a sample of the Visitors Book, viewing is advised.

Harry and May Davis, Crowan Pottery (1946-62), Cornwall, a studio pottery coffee set with maker's mark, 11 pieces

US Medal of Honor winners John Bud Hawk and Ray Davies signed on two 10 x 8 b/w photos. John Druse Bud Hawk (May 30, 1924? November 4, 2013) was a United States Army soldier and a recipient of the United States military's highest decoration, the Medal of Honor, for his actions in World War II during the battle of the Falaise pocket. August 20, 1944, Hawk was serving in Europe as a sergeant in Company E, 359th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division. During a German counterattack on that day, near Chambois, France, he was wounded in the right thigh while taking cover behind a tree. A German shell had penetrated the tree trunk. (French apple trees aren't worth a darn, he said in 1994.) Hawk continued to fight and, in order to direct the shots of friendly tank destroyers, he willingly exposed himself to intense enemy fire. For his actions during the battle, he was awarded the Medal of Honor on July 13, 1945. The medal was formally presented to him by President Harry Truman. Raymond Gilbert Davis (January 13, 1915 - September 3, 2003) was a United States Marine Corps four-star-general who had served in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Davis was decorated several times; he was awarded the Navy Cross during World War II and the Medal of Honor during the Korean War. While serving as the Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps, he retired with over 33 years' service in the Marine Corps on March 31, 1972. During the 1st Marine Division's fight to break out of the Chosin Reservoir area in North Korea during the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir on December 1, 1950, Lt. Col. Davis led his battalion in and through fierce firefights with the Chinese army from Yudam-ni to Hagru-ri. Lt. Col. Davis led in front of his men all the way, marching his battalion at night over mountains in a driving snowstorm, he rescued and saved Fox Company, 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment from annihilation at the Toktong Pass. This action also opened the blocked mountain pass to Hagaru-ri allowing two trapped Marine regiments to escape and link up with the rest of the 1st Division at Hagaru-ri. He was recommended for the Medal of Honor. The medal was presented to Lt. Col. Davis by President Harry S. Truman in a White House ceremony on November 24, 1952. Good condition. Unfortunately, the management's concentration on motor sport, while accruing invaluable publicity, distracted it from the business of manufacturing cars for sale, the result being just 50-or-so sold by 1925 when the company underwent the first of what would be many changes of ownership. The foundations were laid for the commencement of proper series production with the formation of Aston Martin Motors Ltd in 1926 under the stewardship of Augustus 'Bert' Bertelli and William Renwick. Built at the firm's new Feltham works, the first 'new generation' Aston Martins were displayed at the 1927 London Motor Show at Olympia. Like his predecessors, 'Bert' Bertelli understood the effect of competition success on Aston Martin sales and sanctioned the construction of two works racers for the 1928 season. Based on the 1.5-litre, overhead-camshaft road car, the duo featured dry-sump lubrication and this feature was carried over to the International sports model, newly introduced for 1929. Built in two wheelbase lengths (102' and 118'), the International was manufactured between 1929 and 1932, mostly with bodies by Augustus's brother Enrico 'Harry' Bertelli. Aston Martin built 136 cars between 1927 and 1932: 14 on the long chassis and 122 on the short International chassis. A contemporary road test of an International recorded a top speed of 81mph with up to 90mph attainable, depending on the back-axle ratio. The new Aston was soon making its mark on the racetrack, 'Bert' Bertelli and Pat Driscoll winning the Biennial Cup at Le Mans in 1932, one of many competition successes achieved before the International was superseded by the Le Mans and Ulster models. Private owners entered all kinds of competitions, while team drivers included Sammy Davis, Eddie Hall, Cyril Paul and George Eyston. The 'Le Mans' label was first applied to the competition version of the (1st Series) International following Aston's class win and 5th place overall in the 1931 Le Mans race. This conceit was fully justified when the model placed 5th and 7th in the 1932 race and collected the Rudge-Whitworth Biennial Cup. It may, in fact, be the first car named after the Le Mans Race, although many others have since followed Aston Martin's example.'JO 3999' is one of four International-based Le Mans models built in 1931 as Team Car replicas (these should not be confused with the Le Mans model of 1932). Original owner George Hartwell first saw the new two-seater Le Mans on Aston's stand at the London Motor Show in October 1931. However, he wanted a 2/4 seater and asked the Bertellis to copy the slab-tank rear of the '100mph Invicta' to create the required accommodation. In Inman Hunter's book, Aston Martin 1913-1947, Hartwell is quoted as saying: 'After the Show the Bertelli brothers drew out full size the side and rear elevations, which satisfied me and the car was produced.' Clearly displaying its bespoke derrière, 'JO 3999' is pictured in Hunter's book (page 133) and Hartwell's unique Le Mans was also illustrated in The Autocar described as a 'Le Mans four-seater', priced at £675. The AMOC Register records 'JO 3999' as winning the Inter-Varsity Hill Climb in 1931 with George Hartwell, who followed that up by finishing 2nd in the JCC Members' Day handicap at Brooklands in 1932 (his fastest lap at Brooklands was 88.6mph). The Aston appears to have changed hands soon after, the next entry being for 'Laing' in 1933 (3rd in the Inter-Varsity Speed Trial) while later that same year Laing finished 7th overall in the LCC Relay Race at Brooklands. 'JO 399' first came into the current family's ownership when the vendor's late father purchased the car in 1955 for £200. Sold a few years later, the Aston was reacquired in August 1969, just in time to be given to the vendor on his 19th birthday in September '69. Owned by the vendor since then, the car has been kept in good order mechanically but not refurbished cosmetically, so it has a wonderful well-used patina. Ecurie Bertelli fitted a new Laystall crankshaft in the 1980s, and more recently the car has been maintained by Morntane Engineering. 'SHORT SNORTER' FROM EISENHOWER'S PROMOTION TO LIEUT. GENERAL A great war-date 'short snorter', a British ten shilling note signed by DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER and 34 of his friends and associates at Claridge's on the day Ike was promoted to the rank of lieutenant general, July 10, 1942. This historic relic was obtained by Ernest R. 'Tex' Lee, Eisenhower's chief aide for the duration of the war, and he has initialed and dated the note at one margin. It is signed by the newly-promoted Lt. Gen. DWIGHT D. Early 20th century Royal Worcester vase decorated by Harry Davis, the squat ovoid body with twin handles and short flared gilt neck hand painted with sheep against a highland landscape, signed H Davis, upon a circular gilt foot, with puce printed marks beneath including shape number 2249, and date code for 1910, H23.5cmCondition Report:General light wear throughout. One handle has hairline cracks running out from the top mount, and has been overpainted. When inspected under a UV light the vase illuminates around where the handle is mounted to the body. The other handle has also been repainted, most likely to match the other, however it too may have sustained some slight damage, although no cracks are visible.

Perseus (Harry Hamlin) battled Medusa in her Underworld lair, decapitating her so he could use her head to defeat the Kraken. Medusa was designed and created by legendary visual effects artist Ray Harryhausen, who throughout his seven-decade career used stop-motion animation to bring many beloved fantastical creatures to life.This statue was produced from a digital scan of the original Medusa puppet created by Harryhausen for filming. It was displayed as part of the "Myths and Legends" exhibition at the London Film Museum in 2010, where a special 90th birthday celebration for Harryhausen was held in conjunction with the exhibition's opening. The statue also appears in Gilles Penso's 2011 documentary Ray Harryhausen: Special Effects Titan.The highly detailed statue is made of dense biscuit foam with a fibreglass resin skin and a varnished finish. Several snakes are intertwined with its synthetic orange-coloured hair, and Medusa's demonic face features a pair of piercing eyes and a set of sharp teeth. The upper half of her body shows scaly reptilian skin painted in shades of green, and the lower half consists of a coiled rattlesnake tail, painted brown. She has a snake wrapped around her right arm and holds a cream-coloured arrow in her left hand. Medusa also wears a brown quiver on her back, containing three removable faux arrows; the quiver is signed in gold-coloured ink by Harryhausen.The statue is presented on a large rectangular wooden base, designed to resemble stone, although it is not attached. There are signs of wear to the statue's paint finish in places, with marks on the quiver. Some minor sympathetic restoration has been undertaken on the right hand, snakes, and tail. This particular piece depicts a deleted scene in which Jason fought Cerberus, the canine guardian of Hades, here portrayed with two heads. The concept was later used in Desmond Davis' Clash of the Titans (1981), in which Perseus (Harry Hamlin) battled Dioskilos, the two-headed dog.
