Naval/maritime interest (East India Company): a George III three piece tea set of squat circular form with gadrooned rims and collet feet, the teapot with a heraldic crest finial, inscribed 'Presented to Sir Home Popham K.M by the Hon.ble the Court of Directors of the East India Company 1803' ** by Robert & Samuel Hennell, London 1803, 37.5oz weighable silver. (4) Sold with a copy of Popham, H: A Damned Cunning Fellow - The Eventful Life of Rear Admiral Sir Home Popham KLB, KCH, KM, FRS 1762-1820, (published 1991). **Sir Home Riggs Popham was a British Admiral who saw service during the French Revolutionary Wars and the Napoleonic Wars. He is remembered amongst other things for his scientific accomplishments, particularly the development of a signal code that was adopted by the Royal Navy in 1803 (most famously used for the signal 'England expects that every man will do his duty').
