He obtained another truck and on his way to re-join his guns found a second troop engaging some tanks. Together with the Troop Commander and a Warrant Officer he manned one gun until it was knocked out. After seeing to the evacuation of the Commander who was wounded, Captain Irvine took charge and for five hours and under continual shell fire re-organised the depleted detachments, saw that enough vehicles were made serviceable to withdraw the guns, and supervise the evacuation of the wounded. After withdrawing some guns to safety across a wadi under very heavy shell fire, he re-crossed the wadi twice to arrange the removal of other vehicles. He took away the sights from one gun as the tractor containing ammunition was burning a few yards away - Captain Irvine received the M.C."
