Our summer feature auction is jam packed with an outstanding array of fresh-to-the-market fine art and antiques, including the largest group of Maine artwork ever offered in a single sale.
On Saturday, paintings by Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, John Singer Sargent, William Kirkpatrick, John Stobart, James Taylor Harwood, Joseph E. Smith, Arthur Spear, and William Trost Richards will lead the artwork collection. There will be a selection of Old Master works, plus early sculpture, including a 15th c. wooden depiction of the Virgin and a bronze bust by Antonin Mercie. On this day, a rare pair of autographed ballet slippers used by Rudolf Nureyev will be sold. Also, featured on Saturday will be a Federal period carved eagle ship’s figurehead, a Napoleonic Wars prisoner-of-war made ship model, J.A. Hatton ship’s chronometer, Civil War period paint decorated field drum, Merino ram form weathervane, plus a variety of great ship models, scrimshaw items, and cannons. The group of fine Asian antiques will include an important jade bi-disc, bronze figures, and many fine porcelain lots. Antique furniture, such as a Federal mahogany tall clock by Timothy Chandler of Concord, NH and an important American Chippendale gentleman’s chest, will be presented, along with a selection of boxes & tea caddies, carpets & textiles, and early pottery, including a Lowestoft porcelain custard cup from the china service of Thomas Jefferson.
Sunday’s sale will feature 189 works of art by 101 Maine artists, including pieces by Andrew Wyeth, Imero Gobbato, Joseph Fiore, William Thon, Neil Welliver, Sally Caldwell Fisher, Carl Spinchorn, and many others. Paintings by James Edward Fitzgerald, Joseph Francis Plaskett, Jack Tworkov, Marc-Aurele Fortin, and Milton Avery will also be presented, along with sculpted works by Ferdinando Vichi, Barry Norling, and Cabot Lyford. On Sunday, we will sell a variety of full size antique wagons, and a group of stunning iron and stained glass architectural pieces. Furniture will include fine custom, Victorian, modernist, Art Nouveau, and wicker pieces. A 2.95-carat diamond ring and an early gem-set cruciform pendant will be highlights of the estate jewelry collection. Other featured items will include a rare Faberge c. 1900 gold and guilloche enamel pen, a Madoura pottery plaque by Pablo Picasso, Brother Thomas Bezanson pottery, a team-signed 1957 Brooklyn Dodgers baseball, Rudy Vallee’s college scrapbook, a selection of Lalique glass, and silver flatware sets by Tiffany & Co. and Georg Jensen.
