A RARE .650 CALIBRE FLINTLOCK MILITARY RIFLE, EARLY 19TH CENTURY
Description
A RARE .650 CALIBRE FLINTLOCK MILITARY RIFLE, EARLY 19TH CENTURY with tapering sighted barrel rifled with seven grooves (pitted), grooved tang for sighting, border-engraved rounded regulation lock with 'GR' crowned and 'Tower', full stock (fore-end cracked and repaired), the butt with raised cheek-piece on the left, regulation brass mounts comprising trigger-guard inscribed 'H1', flush-fitting side-plate, butt-cap, three ramrod-pipes, escutcheon inscribed 'HH', and fore-end cap, iron saddle bar with ring, a pair of iron sling swivels and original iron ramrod 77.8 cm; 30 5/8 in barrel Another rifle from this group is preserved in the Royal Armouries, Leeds, XII.3784. It has been suggested that the group was made for Hompesch's Hussars though this appears extremely unlikely for a number of reasons. See DeWitt Bailey 2002, pp. 98-102.
