* Albert Osabu Bartimeus, (b. Ghana, 1927) Oil on canvas
60 x 76cm (23.6 x 29.9in)
Albert Osabu Bartimeus, who was born in 1927 and died in 1988 is one of the most important figures in Ghanaian modern art. He trained at the Kumasi College of Art and later became president of the Ghana Association of Artists.
One of the most significant aspects of his work was his choice of subject matter which involved the deliberate presentation of traditional aspects of Ghanaian life and traditional practices at a time when Western orientated educational systems were tending to neglect and undermine indigenous culture. It`s a pleasing irony that Bartimeus`s forward looking modernism took the form of a subtle rebellion against the "modernizing” forces of his day - his works paying homage to a culture that he perceived the be under threat.
Mending Nets is a charming work from the late nineteen seventies or early eighties. Whilst the composition is conventional and the subject matter traditional Bartimeus`s individualistic painting style is full of life and energy capturing the authenticity of the moment through his sensitive brushstrokes describing colour and tone and avoiding line.
Please note that in addition to the 20% VAT on the buyer`s premium, import VAT at the rate of 5% will be added to the hammer price. Click here to view Catalogue
