An Anglo Indian carved ebony box, with a sloping lid, profusely decorated with foliate motifs, the inside of the lid signed in Arabic, the English silver hinges by TWD, London 1866, possibly Thomas William Dee, 23.5cm wide 17.5cm high 14cm deep. Amin Jaffer catalogues these boxes as being made in Nagina (Northern India) by Muslim carvers, and consequently the decoration was limited to foliage and geometrical patterns. There is an interesting photograph in his book `Furniture from British India and Ceylon` of carvers in 1903.
