1684 "A Bill ffor ye Right Honble Countess of Plimmoth 1684", a detailed account, being the bill of William Howell, the Waterman to the Rt. Hon. Countess of Plymouth for payments made and services rendered between 29 Sept. to 28 Nov. 1684, containing various postal matters including:
Oct 2: pd for 3 letters ffor my lady 00-01-05
14: Carrying a letter that I had for Mr. Claydon for My. Lady to Wimbl 00-01-06
17: For bringing a letter to ye Saho to my Lady 00-0-06
PD ffor ye letter at the Post House 00-00-03
30: ffor carrying a letter from Putney to Wimbleton 00-00-06
Pd ye penny post for ye letter 00-01-01
(Note the spelling of "Saho" for Soho and "Wimbleton" for Wimbledon).
Some very minor stain spotting but fine, and one of the earliest recorded instances of the Government Penny Post. Photo
