John Connolly served as a Private with Captain J. Welch's Company, 1st Battalion, 91st Regiment of Foot. The 91st Foot were part of Johnstone's 6th Brigade in Lieutenant-General Lord Hill's II Corps. As such they were stationed in reserve around the village of Merbe Braine, protecting Wellington's right flank and his lines of communication to Ostend.
