Mail for Bermuda and north was left by RMSP at St. Thomas where Cunard carried it via Bermuda to Halifax and on to either New York or Boston. Bermuda became the principal point for mail from the Caribbean
1851 (27 July) entire letter from Trinidad to New York, per RMSP Eagle to Barbados, RMSP Derwent to St. Thomas, where delayed until 21 August, per Cunard Merlin to Bermuda, Osprey to Halifax and thence to New York, rated "1/-" (4d. B.W.I. + 8d. F.W.I. to New York + 1/-) and showing "steam/ship" handstamp and U.S. circular-framed "10" steam ship rate handstamp, the reverse with Trinidad and St. Thomas (1.8) double-arc datestamps.
