The MGA replaced the MG TF 1500 Midget and represented a complete styling break from MG's earlier sports cars. Announced on 26 September 1955[3] the car was officially launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show. A total of 101,081 units were sold through the end of production in July 1962, the vast majority of which were exported. Only 5869 cars were sold on the home market, the lowest percentage of any British car
The MGA design dates back to 1951, when MG designer Syd Enever created a streamlined body for George Philips' TD Le Mans car. The problem with this car was the high seating position of the driver because of the limitations of using the TD chassis. A new chassis was designed with the side members further apart and the floor attached to the bottom rather than the top of the frame sections. A prototype was built and shown to the BMC chairman Leonard Lord. He turned down the idea of producing the new car as he had just signed a deal with Donald Healey to produce Austin-Healey cars two weeks before. Falling sales of the traditional MG models caused a change of heart, and the car, initially to be called the UA-series, was brought back. As it was so different from the older MG models it was called the MGA, the "first of a new line" to quote the contemporary advertising. There was also a new engine available, therefore the car did not have the originally intended XPAG unit but was fitted with the BMC corporate B-Series type allowing a lower bonnet line. The MGA convertible had no exterior door handles, however the coupe had door handles.
It was a body-on-frame design and used the straight-4 "B series" engine from the MG Magnette saloon driving the rear wheels through a four-speed gearbox. Suspension was independent with coil springs and wishbones at the front and a rigid axle with semi-elliptic springs at the rear. Steering was by rack and pinion. The car was available with either wire-spoked or steel-disc road wheels.
In May 1959 the standard cars also received an updated engine, now at 1588 cc producing 79.5 bhp. At the front disc brakes were fitted, but drums remained in the rear. Externally the car is very similar to the 1500 with differences including: amber or white (depending on market) front indicators shared with white side lamps, separate stop/tail and indicator lamps in the rear, and 1600 badging on the boot and the cowl. 31,501 were produced in less than three years.
According to the accompanying Heritage Certificate UYU was dispatched form the factory on the 12th July 1960 as a black car with red interior and grey hood. It was exported to the USA and by 2005 was in New Mexico. In 2015 Stuart Skimming of Dumfries imported it and sold it to our vendor as a restoration project.
A serial restorer he took the body off, rebuild/replaced the running gear and brakes, including added a servo, the engine was dismantled and new rings and shells fitted to factory specs (the condition of the engine lead him to believe the 36,000 on the speedo was correct). A NOS radiator was fitted. The body required two patches to the lower rear wings where they meet the sills, apart from this the body is original with aluminium bonnet, boot and doors. It was resprayed Chariot Red with black leather seats and a new hood; a new speedo was fitted as were 72 spoke chrome wire wheels.
This was completed by October 2016 when it received its first MOT and was registered with DVLA. Today the mileage is less than 70 miles as he likes the challenge of a restoration, not the driving of older cars.
Offered for sale with the V5C, MOTā€™s, Heritage Certificate and the USA paperwork. This well sorted MGA now needs a custodian who will enjoy driving it.

Conditions of Sale

 

  1. All lots will be offered for sale subject to these conditions of sale for veteran, vintage and classic vehicles, motorcycles and automobilia.

     

  2. Spicers Auctioneers act as agents for the vendor of each lot and shall not be party to or liable in any manner whatsoever on any contract of sale between the seller and the buyer.

     

  3. The Buyer.

  1. The highest bidder acknowledged as such by the auctioneer will be the buyer.  If any dispute arises, the auctioneer shall have absolute discretion to settle the matter.  The auctioneer shall rule the bidding and no bid shall be retracted.  The auctioneer reserves the right to refuse any bid.  The bidder at the sale who is successful in purchasing any lot or lots is entirely responsible for paying for such lot or lots in accordance with our terms of business.  Purchases made on behalf of a third party are entirely the responsibility of the bidder at the sale.  The auctioneer reserves the right to bid on behalf of the vendors for any lot and to withdraw, consolidate or divide any lot or lots.

     

  2. The buyer of any lot shall be solely responsible for conforming with the requirements of the Road Traffic Acts, the Construction and Use of Motor Vehicle Regulations and all relevant orders, rules and legislation made in connection therewith.

     

  3. The buyer of any lot shall be solely responsible for the obtaining of any export licence that may be required in connection with any lot purchased. (See below).

     

    Export Licences

  1. Buyers are reminded that an export licence is required for any vehicle purchased for more than Ā£15,000 and manufactured or produced 50 years prior to the date of export.  Certain other items including, inter alia, all manuscripts and documents 50 or more years old and photographic material 60 or more years old and valued at Ā£400 or more require export licences.

  2. It should be noted that export licences usually take a minimum of four weeks to obtain and buyers are reminded that their purchases must be stored away from the auction side, at their cost, pending export.

  3. Buyers are reminded that it is a serious offence to breach or attempt the regulations concerning export licences.

 

  1. Buyers are reminded that their purchases are held at their risk from the fall of the hammer and Spicers Auctioneers will not accept any liability for loss or damage to any lot.

 

 

 

  1. Registration.  To assist the progress of the sale, all prospective buyers must register their name and address at reception and collect a numbered bidding card before the sale commences.  This card may be used to indicate your bids to the auctioneer during the sale.  Two forms of identification need to be supplied to register, at least one with a name, address, signature and preferably photograph, for example a new style driving licence.  For prospective buyers who will not be at the sale, either because they are leaving absentee bids or are having a telephone bid, and who are interested in a vehicle or motorbike, a Ā£1,000 deposit will need to be paid.  This will be refunded if the bid is not successful.  If the bid is successful, this sum will be used towards the final bill.

 

  1. Buyerā€™s Premium.  A buyerā€™s premium of 15% including VAT is payable on the final bid price of each car or motorbike, a buyerā€™s premium of 20% including VAT is payable on the final bid price of each lot in the Automobilia and spares sections.

     

  2. Value Added Tax.  Lots on which Value Added Tax may be payable by the buyer on the ā€œhammer priceā€ are indicated in the catalogue by a symbol beside the lot number.  The buyer shall pay any VAT which may be due on any amounts owed by the buyer under these Terms of Business at the rates prevailing on the day of the auction.

     

  3. Auctioneers Margin Scheme.  The Auctioneers Margin Scheme allows auctioneers to sell items without VAT on the hammer price.  Under the margin scheme an amount equivalent to VAT at the current rate is added to the buyerā€™s premium.  This amount cannot be refunded.  The VAT element will not be shown separately on the buyers invoice.

     

  4. Payment.  The purchase price must be paid by the buyer to Spicers Auctioneers no later than 12 noon on the Monday following the sale.  Our methods of payment are with cash or card.  Cash for amounts over Ā£3,000 will not be accepted.  All purchases must be paid in full before any lot is removed from the premises.  Any buyers unknown to the auctioneer must establish a bank reference with the Accounts department prior the sale.  Anyone who, for whatever reason, is unable to pay for their goods on the day of the sale, must inform the Accounts department as to the date and method that payment will be made.  Accounts not paid within fourteen days will automatically be subject to an interest charge of 5% above base rate from the day of sale.

  3. The ownership of the lot(s) purchased will not pass to the buyer until the buyer has paid the auctioneers in full the total amount due and the auctioneers have applied such payment to the lot.

     

  1. Transfer of Risk.  Each lot shall be the purchaserā€™s sole risk from the fall of the hammer and shall be sold with all faults and imperfections, the auctioneer not being responsible for the correct description, genuineness or authenticity of any lot and making no warranty whatsoever.  The purchaser is deemed to have inspected the lots and satisfied himself as to their condition.

 

  1. Commission Bids.  If instructed, the auctioneers will execute bids and advise prospective purchasers.  This service is free.  Lots will always be purchased as cheaply as is allowed by such other bids and reserves that are on the auctioneerā€™s books.  In the event of identical bids, the earliest will take precedence.  There must always be a maximum limit indicated, i.e. the amount to which you would bid if you were attending he auction yourself.  ā€œBuyā€ or unlimited bids will not be accepted.  Commission bids placed by telephone are accepted at the clientā€™s risk.  We do accept commission bids by facsimile and email, providing they are accompanied by full name and address details.  We urge our clients to place such commission bids within one hour of the close of the view day.

     

  2. Telephone Bids.  Requests for telephone bidding must be registered with the accounts department within one hour of the close of the view day.  It may not be possible to accept requests on sale days.  Written confirmation of such bids from persons unknown to the auctioneers must be received before the commencement of the sale.  Whilst every effort will be made to execute telephone bidding, the auctioneers cannot be held responsible for any default or neglect in connection with this service.  All such arrangements therefore are made entirely at the prospective buyerā€™s risk.

     

  3. Collection of Goods.  All vehicles must be collected by 2.00pm on the Sunday following the sale. Automobilia not collected by this time will be brought back to Driffield at a cost of Ā£5 plus V.A.T. per lot.  Cars not collected by 2.00pm on the Sunday following the sale will be removed to a secure local compound at a cost of Ā£70.00 plus V.A.T. per vehicle.  Motorcycles not collected by 2.00pm on the Sunday following the sale will be removed to our compound at a cost of Ā£40.00 plus V.A.T. per motorcycle.  Storage charges will then be levied at Ā£10.00 per vehicle per day or part thereof.  Lots will only be released to the buyer or their authorised representative upon presentation of release notes issued by Spicers Auctioneers and settlement of any removal, handling and storage charges due.  Purchasers are reminded that each lot shall be the purchaserā€™s sole risk from the fall of the hammer.  Buyers should be aware that no lots will remain at the auction site after 2.00pm on the Sunday following the sale.

     

  4. Third Party Liability.  Every person on the auctioneerā€™s premises before, during or after a sale, shall be deemed to be there at their own risk and shall have no claim against the auctioneer or owner of the auction premises in respect of any injury they may sustain or any accident which may occur.
