A rare German light burgonet for a Styrian Harquebusier (Schutzenhaube),circa 1577-79 with one-piece skull rising to a cabled comb, pivoted pointed peak struck with a mark, neck-guard of two narrow lames and a single broad lower lame all articulating on sliding rivets, the peak and lower neck lame each with turned cabled edge, and retaining some original blackened finish throughout (the armoured side-straps and one rivet missing) 30.5cm; 12in high The state of Styria ordered 4,532 burgonets of this particular type from Nuremberg between 1577 and 1579. To date, 275 burnished examples and 42 blackened examples remain on display in the Landeszeughaus in Graz; fourteen different maker's marks exist within the group. See Dr. F. Pichler, Leipzig, 1880, p.53, plate XVIII, fig.7 and Dr. P. Krenn, Graz, 1987, pp.32-33.
