Cornelius Johnson (English, 1593-1661) Portrait of Henry Cary, 1st Viscount Falkland, Lord Deputy of Ireland Oil on panel A leading peer of his time, Henry Cary (c.1575-1633) was appointed Lord Deputy of Ireland from 1622-29. He was created Viscount Falkland in the county of Fife, in the Scottish peerage, on 10th November 1620. Cary, Henry 1576-1633, First viscount Falkland, Lord deputy of Ireland, was the eldest son of Sir Edward Cary of Aldenhan of Hertfordshire, and his wife Katherine, daughter of Sir Henry Knyvett of Buckingham Norfolk. Cary was admitted to Gray's Inn in 1590 and Exeter College, Oxford in 1593. Knighted in 1599 by the Earl of Essex in Ireland. He appears to have undertaken military service in the Low Countries, appointed a gentleman of the bed chamber and gained a seat of the privy council in 1618. He was appointed the Lord Deputy of Ireland in 1622 through the influence of the Duke of Buckingham. Provenance: Private collection, New York Literature: A. J.
