"Coronation of the Virgin.
Tempera on panel.
Measurements: 65 x 56 cm.
We are faced with a triumphant image of Mary in the centre of the composition, surrounded by six angels who assist and crown her. The work follows typologies already used in the 15th century by artists such as Pedro Berruguete, whose panel now in the Museo de Bellas Artes de Asturias has the same arrangement as the present work. In the words of the Museum of Fine Arts of Asturias regarding the work by the master from Paredes de Nava, "The interpretation of the subject is complex, as it has aspects that correspond to the characteristic image of the Immaculate Conception, such as the humble and accepting expression (the lowered eyes and praying hands) and the loose hair. She is also located in the heavenly space, surrounded by angels and placed on the lunar crescent with her horns upwards; an element that would become consubstantial with the theme of the Immaculate Conception in the second quarter of the 16th century. It could also correspond to the Assumption, a scene in which the angels appear helping in the Marian Ascension. It is usually complemented by the coronation of Mary by God the Father, sometimes assisted by angels or by Christ. We are therefore looking at a representation of multiple or complex meaning, on a par with other compositions that in the second half of the 16th century would begin to establish their iconographic entity while intermingling as images of Marian exaltation: Assumption, Immaculate Conception and the Coronation".
