An important Mallorcan Carlos IV piece of furniture made at the end of the 18th century, a high and flourishing moment in the island's furniture production, which the bibliography has called the "golden age" of Mallorcan marquetry. Certainly, the remarkable quality of the marquetry is evident in every detail of this neoclassical chest of drawers: entirely decorated with marquetry work, combining lemongrass, palo santo and walnut to represent herringbone motifs and plant bouquets, both on the length of the front and on the top and sides, in the form of festoons and garlands. The floral designs alternate with lemongrass fillets that outline and emphasise the linearity of the neoclassical structure of the whole. In addition to the vegetal design, which shows the skilful work of the Mallorcan cabinetmakers, the silver keyholes are also noteworthy. Formally, the chest of drawers has four drawers of the same size, except for the top drawer, which is divided into two smaller drawers. The cabinet has a smooth front and stands on truncated pyramid-shaped legs decorated with vertical grooves, a stylised linearity in the neoclassical style. This was a period of splendour (which began in the 1770s and lasted until the mid-19th century) when Mallorcan workshops exported pieces to the Madrid court of King Charles IV, which were considered to be of a quality equivalent to Parisian and London furniture.
