JOSEF HOFFMANN (Brtnice, República Checa, 1870 – Viena, 1956).
Set of six Viennese Secession chairs; Austria, circa 1900.
Oak wood.
Measurements: 103,5 x 42,5 x 45 cm.
Set of six dining chairs framed within the Viennese Secession, with a structure in oak wood with rounded lines and a well-defined structure. Its design is based on the play of straight lines and simple curves which, although derived from classicism, generally characterises the production of the Viennese Secession. This type of sober, solid and functional, yet elegant and stylised structure was to play an important role in future functionalism, its influence extending as far as the Bauhaus. These chairs stand on straight turned legs at the front and square-sectioned legs at the back, slightly narrower at the base and slightly open at the back, following the shape of the neoclassical sabre leg. The four legs are joined by a simple, undecorated 'H'-shaped frame with simple uprights. The seat is also rectilinear, with wider, unornamented uprights on the sides, and a narrower waist, with geometric carved decoration in the central area, composing a series of parallel lines reminiscent of the classical triglyph. The lower half of the backrest is open, straight and relatively narrow, slightly inclined for greater comfort, and ends in a lowered arched crest, decorated with the same parallel carvings as the waistband. The lower part of the backrest is open, with three turned columns, matching the front legs.
