VICENTE MARCH Y MARCO (Valencia, 1859 - 1927)."The Christening".Oil on panel.Signed and located in
"The Christening".
Oil on panel.
Signed and located in the lower right corner.
Size: 35 x 50.5 cm; 72 x 84.5 cm (frame).
In this panel Vicente March offers us a nineteenth-century image contextualised in the interior of a church in which a baptism is being celebrated. The light, concentrated on the left, illuminates a young mother holding her child in her arms, together with the rest of the child's family. In front of them is an elderly priest accompanied by two altar boys. The chapel in which the scene takes place is notable for its architecture and its meticulous decorative elements: pointed arches, Renaissance sculptures, Baroque altarpieces and ceiling paintings demonstrate March's attention to detail, while the figures are dressed in their best clothes and situated in different positions, most of them attentive to the main event. This is a work belonging to the genre of "de casacons", elaborately painted and descriptive scenes set in the 17th and 18th centuries, very much to the taste of the clientele of the second half of the 19th century. In France these works, known as "de tableutin", were mainly of a gallant nature, inspired by the works of 18th-century French authors such as Boucher and Watteau. In Spain, the reference point was Velázquez and his contemporaries, which is why we will more often see scenes of musketeers and other 17th-century characters. Here, on the other hand, he sought a subject more in keeping with 19th-century everyday life, whose themes were approached in a similar way to this painting.
A Valencian painter trained at the San Carlos School of Fine Arts, Vicente March completed his studies in Rome at the Chigi academy. Later he also travelled to North Africa, where he began to paint Orientalist themes. During his lifetime he received numerous prizes and honours, such as the silver medal at the Valencia Regional Exhibition (1881), prizes at the Berlin and Munich exhibitions at which he regularly presented his work from 1888 onwards, the silver medal at the Rome International Exhibition (1893) and, to round off his career, the appointment as Knight of the Order of Charles III by the Spanish government shortly before his death. In 1994 the town council of Subiaco dedicated a retrospective exhibition to him. The bulk of March's work can be found in Germany, Belgium, Brazil, England, the United States, Argentina, France and Sweden. In Spain his work is little represented, and is concentrated in the hands of private individuals.
