Modelled after LUDWIG MIES VAN DER ROHE (Germany, 1886 - USA, 1969).Chaise longue, late 1970s-
Chaise longue, late 1970s-early 1980s.
Stainless steel, root wood and black leather.
Provenance: prominent Catalan family. Possibly custom made to order.
In good condition.
Measurements: 72 x 200 x 81 cm.
Unique and totally original design piece. It is an icon of the Midcentury design world: a sophisticated, functional and sculptural piece. It is based on the iconic Barcelona piece in which Ludwing Mies van der Rohe achieved worldwide fame and success. The series of high-design furniture was developed in the 1960s for Knoll; since then such pieces have topped the world's interior design charts. This daybed or chaise longue was developed at a later time, around the late 1970s and early 1980s. The profile of the piece is unique, totally customised. It was probably created under a specific commission. It comes from a prominent Catalan family, so the owner probably made this commission to measure. The structure is made of stainless steel in perfect condition, with a support side with circular fretwork and a shape that follows the streamline language. To this structure is added an arm or backrest in a root wood cylinder. The seat is in original black leather in very good condition with a capitonné finish.
Architect and industrial designer, Mies van der Rohe trained with Bruno Paul and Peter Behrens, and opened his own studio in Berlin in 1912. Between 1930 and 1933 he directed the Bauhaus in Dessau, although the political situation in Germany forced him to emigrate to the United States shortly afterwards. There he continued his brilliant career, while at the same time teaching at the Illinois Technology Institute in Chicago. During his career he designed emblematic buildings, mainly in Germany and the United States, particularly his skyscrapers in New York and Chicago, the German Pavilion for the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition, and the NeueNationalgalerie in Berlin.
