Altar in polychrome and gilded wood.Early 20th century.Measurements: 364 x 207 x 145 cm.The style of
Early 20th century.
Measurements: 364 x 207 x 145 cm.
The style of this altar is typical of the middle of the 18th century, with scrolls and leaves gilded in fine gold, with three streets with noble fabrics in red and impressive gilded scrolls on the sides.
The Virgin of Fatima appears in the central street, to the left the Virgin of Carmen, and to the right the Christ of Medinaceli.
The Virgin of Fatima is an invocation with which the Virgin Mary is venerated in Catholicism. In the same line as other Marian apparitions, it had its origin in the testimonies of three shepherd children, who claimed to have witnessed several Marian apparitions in the Cova da Iria, Fatima, in Portugal, between May 13 and October 13, 1917. From then on, this Marian invocation spread its fame beyond its local boundaries to the whole world.
The Virgin of Mount Carmel in the Holy Land, near Haifa, was venerated by the Order of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, known as the Carmelites, who spread the veneration of this Marian devotion throughout the world.
In Spain, Puerto Rico and Costa Rica she is the patron saint of the sea, and is also the patron saint of the Spanish Navy.
The Christ of Medinaceli, also known as Nuestro Padre Jesús de Medinaceli or Jesús Nazareno Rescatado, is an image of Jesus of Nazareth that evokes the moment of his Passion when Pilate presents him to the people.
The predella or altar front is an embroidered damask pastry with heraldic motifs.
