"Bust of Christ".
Polychrome wax and plaster base.
Measurements: 10 x 8 x 6,5 cm.
Sculpture made in wax which represents the expiring face of Christ, with the mouth half open and the eyes half closed, the author shows us that it is about the last moments of Jesus' life, where all the suffering is evident on his dying skin. The flat back of the piece indicates that it is probably part of a larger sculptural complex, perhaps a Calvary, or an ornamentation on an architectural structure.
Given the importance given to religious images in the Christian world, ambitious sculptural series and extensive iconographic programmes were created for churches and convents, as well as printed prints, medals and reliquaries for private devotion. As a whole, regardless of their size or medium, these images fulfilled the aim of sacralising everyday life beyond the altars. From among this vast repertoire we would like to note those painted replicas of a particular devotional sculpture, whether of a Christ or a Virgin, which technically recreate its original location as well as displaying the figure in question. These painted copies were called "true portraits" or vera efigie, an artistic phenomenon of prolific production in the viceroyalty of New Spain and the European metropolis.
