ISLAMIC, SELJUK BRONZE PLATE WITH GEOMETRIC DESIGNS

Description
ca. 1100 AD. Seljuk. Bronze bowl with flaring and flattened bottom. The interior of the bowl is occupied by an intricate six-pointed star motif formed from three interlocking almond shapes within a circle. The entirety of the empty spaces between these shapes is filled with further geometric details. The Seljuks were a Turkic dynasty who swept out of Central Asia in the early 10th century and conquered an enormous expanse, covering most or all of present-day Turkmenistan, Iran, Iraq, Turkey and beyond. After inflicting crushing military defeats on a host of rivals, the most famous of which was perhaps that against the Byzantines at the Battle of Manzikert in 1071, the Seljuk sultans became major patrons of art and architecture. Excellent condition. Size: L:22mm / W:180mm ; 160g Provenance: Private London collection, formed in the 1970s on the UK and European art market.
