A set of four Victorian silver gilt Dinner Plates, with gadrooned rims, each engraved with the coat of arms of Thomas George Baring, Earl of Northbrook, with maker’s mark for Barnard & Sons Ltd (John, Edward, Walter & John Barnard), hallmarked for London 1872, the reverse stamped by retailer ‘THOMAS, NEW BOND STREET’ and bearing inventory numbers 81, 117, 134 and 169, diameter 25cm. £1,500-£2,000 --- Provenance: The arms are those of BARING, as borne by the Earls of Northbrook. Thomas George Baring, 2nd Baron Northbrook, 1st Viscount Baring of Lee and 1st Earl of Northbrook (1826-1904) was the eldest son of Sir Francis Baring, 1st Baron Northbrook, whom he succeeded in 1866. From 1857-1866, he was the Liberal MP for Falmouth and Penryn. During his extensive political career he served as a Lord of the Admiralty, Under-Secretary for War and for India and Secretary to the Admiralty. In 1868, under Gladstone as Prime Minister, he again became Under Secretary for War. In 1872 he was appointed Governor General and Viceroy of India, He resigned in 1876 over a policy difference with the Secretary of State for India, the Duke of Argyll. In 1876 he was created Earl of Northbrook. Ambassadorial and Viceregal ceremonial plate was supplied by the State, but was usually retained by the holder on retirement. Condition Report The gilding is quite worn on all four dishes, and there is surface scratching to the centre and reverse of all the dishes. Gross weight 87 oz.

If you live within the UK, items will be despatched using Royal Mail Special Delivery. Outside of the UK
If the item/s being sent are worth under £1000 in total they are sent using Royal Mail’s Signed For International service. This ensures the item must be signed for when it is delivered.
If the item/s being sent are valued at over £1000 in total they will be sent using FedEx. This service allows next day delivery to customers in many parts of the US and parcels are fully trackable using the FedEx website.
