W. E. Scafe was born on 7 November 1878, the son of General C. H. Scafe, R.M. He was educated at St. Paul’s School, London and the Royal Naval School, Eltham. Commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the 3rd battalion Devonshire Regiment (Militia) in 1897 and in the regular forces in 1899. Lieutenant W. E. Scafe, Devonshire Regiment, served in the Boer War. Being present in operations in Natal during 1899, including the action at Lombard’s Kop. At the defence of Ladysmith, being slightly wounded, 27 December 1899. Served in operations in Natal, March-June 1900; then in operations in Transvaal, east of Pretoria, July-November 1900, including the actions at Belfast and Lydenberg. Operations in Transvaal, November 1900-December 1901.
Promoted to Captain in January 1907 and Major in September 1915. During August 1914 he was Assistant Embarkation Officer, Queenstown. Served as Brigade Major in France, September 1914-August 1915. Throughout the rest of the war he was variously Deputy Assistant Adjutant and Quartermaster in France and Italy. Was seven times mentioned in despatches, awarded the D.S.O. in 1916 and the C.M.G. in 1919. Granted the brevet of Lieutenant-Colonel in June 1917. Served with Southern Command until 1924; placed on Half Pay in 1931. With some copied research and a copied photograph of the recipient.

If you live within the UK, items will be despatched using Royal Mail Special Delivery. This service provides parcel tracking (via the Royal Mail website) and next weekday delivery (betwen 9am and 1pm). Items delivered within the UK are covered by our insurance company. Heavy and bulky lots will be sent by courier, in discussion with the client.
Outside of the UK
If the item/s being sent are worth under £1000 in total they are sent using Royal Mail’s Signed For International service. This ensures the item must be signed for when it is delivered.
If the item/s being sent are valued at over £1000 in total they will be sent using FedEx. This service allows next day delivery to customers in many parts of the US and parcels are fully trackable using the FedEx website.
