An attractive wool and silk tapestry fragment, depicting The Virgin and Child seated in a meadow crowned by Angels with a victory wreath, flanked by two female figures, on the left apparently emblematic of Military Victory wearing a helmet, carrying a shield and a cross and offering a chalice, on the right emblematic of Naval Victory, holding an anchor and a parrot, a small servant in foreground in a short tunic bearing a tray of fruit, various animals and plants in foreground, a castle in a landscape in background. Flemish late 16th century, 22in. x 22in. 56cm. x 56cm. Restorations. This lunette-shaped fragment is possibly from the middle of a tapestry with a wide grotesque or other decorative surround or one of several such panels arranged in registers. Details extensively worked in yellow, cream and other silks. Framed
