Great letter by ''Catch-22'' author Joseph Heller, referencing his most famous novel and its protagonist, John Yossarian. Typed letter signed is dated 2 May 1974 to Professor James Nagel and reads in full, ''I don't think permission will ever be needed for anyone to make what use of the Brandeis materials they want to, so go right ahead with my best wishes. Reading those paragraphs again after so long a time brought back a flood of memories. You do, perhaps, mistake their character. They were not intended as a plan for Catch-22 but as written paragraphs for possible inclusion in one of the hospital scenes as a line of literary parody, of novels and criticim [sic], that wisely, I decided not to pursue. Also, there was not for a moment the thought of making Yossarian Jewish. That was a line of development in which I did not want to get involved. I hope this information is welcomed by you. Cordially, Joseph Heller'', signed in bright green ink. Letter on Heller's personal stationery is accompanied by original ''Air Mail'' envelope. 5.75'' x 7.75'' letter is in near fine condition.
